On 08/23/25 at approximately 1928 hours I was dispatched to motor vehicle accident with unknown injuries. An automatic crash notification for a Toyota vehicle indicated a crash near 151 Sunset Blvd N. Unit#1 and Unit#2 were both in the middle of the intersection of Bronson Way N and Sunset Blvd N. Unit#1 was facing south and Unit#2 was facing east. I noticed heavy damage to the front of Unit#1 and the driver side of Unit#2. There was a flagger directing traffic on scene, named Michael B. Carroll (02/24/59), who told me that the driver in Unit#2 was injured. As I approached Unit#2 1 could see the driver leaned over the center console towards the passenger seat. I asked him if he was ok and if he was feeling pain anywhere. He pointed to his neck and was then able to point to his left arm and said he had pain there. He did not speak English very well and told me he speaks Somali. I tried to get him out of the vehicle but he could not stand or sit up. Since he was complaining of neck pain I decided to leave him in his car. The driver of Unit#1 was now complaining of knee pain. He said it was not serious but still wanted to be treated by medics. Renton Fire department showed up a few moments later and began treating both drivers. The driver of Unit#1 told me that he was traveling south on Sunset Blvd N in lane 1 approaching the 1 -405 S on ramp. He told me he saw the flagger in the intersection but did not see if he was waving him on or telling him to stop. He proceeded into the intersection and collided with Unit#2. He later told me that he had not had anything to drink and was not on his phone, but said he was not paying attention and may have just zoned out. He mentioned he should have gotten an energy drink for his drive home. He did not see what signal the flagger was giving him. I was unable to interview the driver of Unit#2 because he was not able to speak very well and was transported to Harborview hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. The firefighters believed he had a neck or back injury but weren't entirely sure. Michael told me that Unit#2 was in lane 4 of Bronson Way N facing east. He indicated to turn north on Sunset Blvd N. Michael gave Unit#2 the signal to proceed through the intersection and had stopped traffic traveling south on Sunset Blvd N. He said the driver of Unit#1 appeared to not see him and drive into the intersection without slowing down and collided with Unit#2. The driver of Unit#1 was treated for minor scrapes to his right knee. The airbags on the driver side and passenger side of Unit#2 deployed but not the front airbags. The airbags in Unit#1 did not deploy. Based on the accounts from the driver of Unit#1, and the flagger Michael, the driver of Unit#1 is the proximate cause of this accident. By his own admission, the driver if Unit#1 was not paying attention to the flagger controlling the intersection, preceded into the intersection, and struck Unit#2. The driver of Unit#1 was cited by mail for RMC10-12-25 inattentive driving, under citation # 5A0763223.
