NARRATIVE
25-7112 ACC
On 8/15/2025 1 was working as a uniformed patrol officer and driving a marked patrol vehicle for the
City of Renton. I was dispatched to a report of a blocking collision without injury near the intersection
of Union Ave NE and NE Sunset Blvd Renton/King/WA. An involved party was calling to report that
they were blocking the right turn lane on northbound Union Ave NE.
I arrived on scene and located both parties, they advised both vehicles were drivable and moved to a
nearby parking lot.
I spoke with the driver of the 2005 Mazda 3 WA/CHW6944 (Unit 1), identified by his WADL as Barry
D Buttress DOB: 10/14/1982. Barry said that he was driving north on Union Ave NE and began to
slow when he saw Unit 2 stopped in front of him. Barry said that he did not slow fast enough and
ended up colliding with the rear of Unit 2. Barry estimated the speed of the collision at around 10mph,
he was not injured. There was damage to the front bumper and hood of the Mazda. Barry did not
report any injuries.
I then spoke with the driver of the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban WA/AHE4890 (Unit 2), identified by her
WADL as Cynthia A Depoule DOB: 11/24/1969. Cynthia said that she was in the #1 stopped for traffic
when Unit 1 collided with her. There was damage to the rear bumper of the Suburban. Cynthia's
passenger, identified by his WADL as John R Gerber DOB: 6/7/1947 was the right front passenger,
he advised he had lower back pain from the collision. John declined aid and advised he had an
upcoming doctor's appointment.
Both vehicles were drivable.
I provided both drivers with an exchange of information form.
The weather at the time of the collision was overcast with rain and the road conditions were wet.
cited Barry for RMC 10-12-25 Inattentive Driving under Sector citation #5A0723010. This citation
should be mailed to Barry at his DOL Address.
RMC 10-12-25 states: It shall be a traffic infraction, subject to RCW 7.80.120(1)(a), for any person to
drive a motor vehicle on any public highway, street, alley, or road in an inattentive manner in the City
of Renton. "Inattentive manner" in this section means a lack of: 1) attentiveness required to safely
operate the vehicle under the prevailing conditions, including, but not limited to, the nature and
condition of the roadway, the weather conditions, the presence of pedestrians, the presence of other
traffic, or by the driver focusing or directing the driver's attention to something other than driving the
motor vehicle; or 2) attentiveness that would permit the driver of a motor vehicle to observe anything
resting on, or traveling on, or entering the roadway in time to take appropriate action as
circumstances require. (Ord. 4462, 7-25-94, eff. retroactive to 7-1-94; Ord. 5635, 11-14-11)
