Connason, Director , r Re: Scils & Foundation Investigation for hE Kennydale Sanitary Sewer Repair 1 Gentlemen: In accordance with yc ,r request we present herein our cost proposal on the referenced project. Based upon a recent conversation with Tom Touma and inspection of your print entitled "Kennydale Sanitary Sewer Repair, " it is our understanding that this sewer has developed settlement and mis- alignment problems in as many as six areas. Infiltration and dis- placement were observed by a television camera in a recent survey. It is not known what procedures were followed during construction supervision, however it is suspected that pipe bedding methods and the use of a box possibly caused d. ige to the pipe prior to backfilling. Soil borings were not made for the original design because of the existence of an adjacent metro sewer, therefore f subsurface conditions were assumed from borings done for that line. Though the metro borings are a few hundred feet away, they generally show some peaty materials between the elevation of 0 and +20 feet. With the foregoing conditions we -2cormnend that the City proceed with a soils and fm:ndation investigation in the areas under- going settlement and/or infiltration before going ahead with a contract to repair the misaligned sewer. If soil conditions are known prior to beginning repair, the design will be able to anti- cipate any unusual problems such as the existence of peat or soft, highly compressible silts or clays. 705 N.E. All borings would be drilled with a specially designed drilling rig equipped with a hollow-stem auger. Standard penetration and undisturbed samples would be taken through the hollow stem. All borings would be logged by an experienced engineering geologist from our firm. Upon completion of the above outlined field exploration s. nples would be returned to our laboratory for testing and further clas- sification. Anticipated settlements. 4. Recommended bedding materials. 5. Suitability of excavated materials for use as backfill or imported backfill specifications. 6. Compaction specifications for backfill. 7. After completion of t aubsurface soils investigations, STR can perform or assist City persona.. as required in performa-ic2 of the following: o Evaluation of original contract plans and specifications, of construction techniques utilized in installation of the sewer and of soils data resulting from the subsurface soils investigations to d,?termine probable causes of the failures. o Determination of alterative methods of reconstruction of the sewer, of the estimated cost of each method, and of constraints, limitations and risks associated with each method.
