We described our planned scone of services in our modified proposal dated duly 11, 1986, and received authorization to proceed on vu;y 14, Ig86. The purpose of our work was to obtain and review exist- ing subsurface information, evaluate subsurface soil and groundwater c. ^ditions, develop geotechnical recommendations to aid in the design of the project, and recommend further investigation if necessary. We understand the proposed project will consist of a new 18-inch diam- eter ductile iron or PVC pipe beneath Shattuck Avenue extending about 16CO feet from South Fourth Street to South Seventh Street. The invert depth will be approximately eight feet at the north end and at the south erc the new pipeline will tap into the existing 108-inch diameter METRO Eastside Interceptor which has an invert at a depth oC approximately 25 feet below South Seventh Street. The pipeline will cross under the Burlington Northern railroad embankment (at Hauser day) in a 36-inch diameter jack., steel casing. A cast iron monrment cover was installed to protect scrvat'.on INFORMATION REVIEW NO. zonducted a search for available soils into-oration in the area of the proposed sewer alignment. We reviewed a soils report entitled "Final Soils Report, Eastside interceptor, Section 1, R20111, Renton, Washing- ton", dated May 12, 1961. in addition, we reviewed as-built drawings of the METRO Eastside Interceptor, that is located beneath South Sevento Street at the south end of the proposed alignment. Information from selected boring logs found in these references were considered in our analysis. The approximate locations of these borings are shown on Draw- ing 1. The boring logs are enclosed at the end of this report. We were unable to locate any additional soils information In the vicinit, , al- though attempts were made through Several sources. CN11IN CJh.ullanlf Nw SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Conditions encountered in boring B-1 generally consisted of recent alluvial deposits underlying approximately 1-1/2 feet of gravelly sand road fill. The alluvial deposits consisted of an interlayered sequence of sand, silt and silty sand with occasional organic silt laminations and gravel layers. The soils were generally very loose t0 loose or very • soft to firm. A summary log of boring 8-1 is presented as Drawinc ?. The groundwater level was measured at the time df our exploration Sept,-ber 11. 198o1 and one week of ter do l l ing was completed (Septem- ber 18, 1986) In the observation well , The groundwater level on both dates was approximately 9 feet below the ground surface or at about elevation 1S-112. The boring logs from the METRO Eastside .MterCeptor report showed a general alluvial sequence similar to that found in the boring drilled as part of this investigation. The groundwater level ineicated for tr- nearest boring drilled by others (B-81 was approximately elevation 20, on September 9, 1960, which is several feet higher than the groundwater level measured on September 18. 1986. DISCUSSION AND RECONNENDATIONS General The proposed project appears feasiole from a geotechnical standpoint. High groundwater levels will need to be considered in both the design and Construction phases of the project. Although relatively soft, com- pressible soils exist below proposed invert levels, net loading of these soils should be nominal or negative, and extensive overexcavation or pile support is not anticipated. con.rw cenwn•nn N W Dewater.ng The groundwater level at the time of our explorations was at a depth of about nine feet below the ground surface (approximately elevation 15-1/2) and was reportedly at elevation 20 in 1960 In the vicinity of the southern terminus of the project. Excavation will reportedly extend as deep as approximately ten feet below the ground surface along the majority 1`0 the alignment. The connection to the METRO 'Interceptor will oe approximately 17 feet below the ground sur*ace. The water-bearing sand, silty sand, and gravel zones at invert levels are relatively permeable. In our opinion, dewatering by means of sumps will not be adequate. We recommend that dewatering wells be installed prior to starting excavation. The dewatering system should be designed and In- stalled such that groundwater levels are lowered to at least two feet below the maximum anticipated depth of excavation (including at least ore foot of overexcavation and replacement). Portions of the soil profile are relatively impermeable (sllt) , and it is possible that the dewatering wells will extend into more permeable layers (sand or grav- el). We recommend that the well casing he slotted and backfiiled with gravel through the entire length to intercept all contributing soil zones. Dewatering may induce some surface subsidence in the vicinity of the well ; therefore, wells should be located away from structures that could be damaged by settlement. If signs of damaging settlement devel- op, a groundwater recharging system may be necessary. Detailed assess- ment of building settlement Is beyond the scope of this report, but based on previous experience in similar soil conditions, we expect approximately one to two inches of settlement at the trench due to Increased stresses during dewatering. Excavation Considering the generally loose or soft consistency of soil to be exca- vated, we anticipate that conventional excavation equipment will be adequate to remove the materials from the trench. Temporary shoring or a laying box should be used to support trench walls and protect workers. Stability of trench walls, and the protection of workers and adjacent utilities, is the responsibility of the contractor. ' Comm.C...ull.m.ww r F ourd at- O,Is ExpOSed foundation Soils are expected to consist Of very loose Silty sard and soft silt. Even if the groundwater level is lowered as re,om- mended, foundation soil will most likely be wet, and will easily be disturbed by construction activities. We therefore recommend that exca- vation be performed with a smooth-bladed bucket, that foot traffic on foundation soils be min'miced, and that the trench be Overexcavated at least 1: inches and bac kfilled with crushed rock or quarry spalls not exceeding six inches or less than one Inch in size to provide a stable working surface and to protect foundation soils. Where peat or organic soils are exposed at the base of the trench, this overexcavatlon Should be at least 24 inches deep. We recommend that manholes be provided with a layer of crusned rock or quarry spalls as recemmendec aocve at least 12 inches thick to protect foundation sails. For the recommended means of support, a design bear- ing capacity of 1,000 pounds Per square foot (Ps ) is recommended for manhole design. The silts are relatively compressible; we estimate that net increase in vertical load Uelow manholes could cause settlements on the order of 1/2 inch for manholes, and approximately one inch along the trench. Beddi n% The 18-inch diameter pipe may be bedded with pea gravel . This should extend at least four inches below the pipe and up to the springline of the pipe. Pea gravel bedding should meet the below recommended grada- tion limits: U.S. Standard Percent Passing, Sieve Size _bX Dry Weight 3/8 inch 100 1/4 inch 30 - 100 No. 8 0 - 5 wnwnCon1u14nlr NW Back I11 SOUS excavated from the trench are expected to be wet and fine_gra i red, and are not considered SUltabie for reuse as backtill in areas where subsequent settlement Of the trench backtill is ob;ectionable (suth as under streetsl. Therefore, It Is recommended that trencn spoils be hauled from the Site and be wasted and that backtill material be bank run Class A Ir accordance with Section 25.2,3; Of the 1985 APWA Standard suecificat!oh$. ;nitial backtill should be tarried alcrg tre sides and under the haunt^es ,'f the pipe and should extend at least six inches over tFe top of the Pipe. The fill should be placed in thin lifts 'approximately elgnt inches or less) and compacted to at least 95 Per'cegt Of the maximum dry density (as determined by the ASTM 8-155'. compaction ,est procedure). It is recommended that backtill adjacent to manholes consist Of bank run class A material as riscdmmended above in order to facilitate placement and c;xnpaction in a closely confined space. The fill should be com- pacted similarly to subsequent backtill for pipes. It should be brought ' up evenly around the manhole so that unbalanced lateral earth pressures d0 not develop. Earth Pressures ' For bedoir: and backfill placed as described ab —, we recommend that ' the pipe br designed for vertical Soil loads equal to or greater than those presented on Figure 1. The values shown on Figure 1 are based an vertical trench walls with a trench width of 3-1/2 feet, and moist unit f weight Of "Clifill of 130 pounds per cubic foot (pcf); no safety factor ■ has been applied to the calculated backflll loads. Figure 1 also indi- ' cotes loads on the jacked crossing, assuming a moist unit weight of natural soil of 115 ptf. A modulus of soil reaction (E') of 400 pounds • per sduare inch is recommended for flexible pipe design. This value assumes granular backfill acting in combination with a full hydrostatic head. An ultimate passive resistance of 400 pounds per cubic foot may be used for calculations concerning the jacked crossirg. Uplift We have estimated uplitt potential assumi.n, ^anholes will to five feet O.D. ty four feet I.D. with a six-inch lei:• floor. Based on this as- sumption, it appears there may be a potential. for buoyancy due tr high groundwater levels. The design engineer srould evaluate uplift poten- tial based cn actual manhole dimensions and weights. We recommend that the groundwater be assumed to rise to the ground surface for this evalu- ation. Uplift can be resisted by increasing the weight of the manhole. Alter- natively, the base of the manhole can be provided with an exterior flange so that overlying soil resists uplift. For granular backfill , as discus°.ed above, a buoyant unit weight of 65 pcf is recommended for design purposes. Only soil directly above the flange should be con- sidered. Uplift of the pipe may be resisted by a column of granular backfill having a buoyant unit weight of 65 pcf except along the jacked crossing. For uplift resistance for the jacxed crossirg, a buoyant unit weight of 50 pcf is recommended. d anr.n•ccn•Wiu.m,ww • -8- • The Conclusions ano recommendations summarized to this report were pre- pared in accordance with generally accepted professional engineering principles and practices.
