Eriksen, Water Engineer SUBJECT: Condition of Sewage Liftstations The City Utility Oepartment presently maintain one storm and eleven sanitary sewer liftstations. Six of these stations are connected to the City's telemetering system, one is equipped with a warning unit at the controlroom and five stations have no connection to any warning at the shop. Nine stations operate with inpellerpunp driven by electrical motor varying ficim 3 to 20 M.P. Two are Pneumatic Ejector lift stations an' one station is equipped with a Submersible pump. Most of the station operates without any problem and does not require any special attention at this time. However, it is recommended that five of the six stations not connected to our telemetering service should be equipped with some form for warning to the watershop, and then equipped with telemetaring when existing systems are updated or • wed. Two stations need imrtediote attention: A) "Sunset" located at the Southeast corner of Sunset Blvd. E. and Union AVenue The general condition of pumps, motors, ecc. is good. The level indication is operated by a dual set of small compressors (constant runningialternating) . The station is presently operated on cne compressor. The compressor is in bad condition and the shop is not equipped with any replacement. I would recommend that this station would be equipped with a new set of coq •esso rs. The new compressors are of a better quality and of o tw years same type as used at Lake Washington Beach Park liftstation o r without any problems. This modificatior to Sunset liftstation would not require any oche- material and could be installed by City forces in 4 man hours. This station is not equipped with an overflow and during a power failure or other failure where the station would be oct of service for a while, the sewage will overflow onto the paving in Union Avenue N.E., via an existing lamphole. It would therefore also be recommended that an "overflow" should be installed from the lamphcle to the ditch line. This could be installed by City's forces with material in stock except for restoration material for ditch line. The total cost for modification of this station is estimated to be: $163.40 (This does not include City forces' labor, pipe fol overflow, backfillr— and restoration material) 'n - I :t 0 2. Memo J. Wilson Total time. estimated for installation of compressors would be 4 manhours and for Installation of overflow 11 manhours. B)"Boeing Liftstation" located in Northeast corner of N. 8th Street and Park Avenue N. The condition and setup of this station is similar to the `,unset Station. This station is equipped with a compressor with storage unit. This type of compressor has been off the market for some time but repairs have been possible by stripping a similar compressor removed from a . old station. .. (At this time no more parts are available) It is therefore recommended that a new compressor 'th a storage tank be purchased to replace the existing one. Th- estimated cost of this would be: 214.00 Compressor & storage tank $ Regulator $ 10.80 TOTAL $ 224.00 This unit could be installed by City forces in 8 manhours, and no additional material would be needed. Both these stations are presently in operation but the condition of the rompressors is bad and should be replaced as soon as possible. These recommendations are based on fast are economical repair, with minimum modifications to the stations, using equipment which has proven to be satisfactory in the past,& by using City forces for installation. n i i y NOTE; all prices are P.O.B. factory N •r P(J •! `a Sales Tax not included T T- Y LCE:mj LEIY t i !riw. nr✓ns.. .`fitly K July 30. 1969 t ,i TO: Jack Nilson Pert ucHfnry FROM: Leiv Priksen s St76JP.M Cottonwood Lift Station e The proposed iemrovement on the above mentioned station is In progress - and sbuuld be completed in the near future. (The existing pump should after it has been removed be sent out for a complete overhaul and installed in the same station at the vacant location). This station has an over-flow line to the Cedar river, and with the new control and pump, there shouldn't be any danger of flooding the station. In ease some foreign material like a rag etc., should gar into the Impeller the danger that the mmn would stop and sewage flow to the river and flooding of the station is "resent. It Is therefore recommended that a Supervisory Control System be installed to transfer any normal or abnormal action Sn the liftstation to the watershop, and the main control panel at the fire station. This would not eliminate the problem C.at the mom .vuld stop, hilt action could be taken to set everything In operation before any damage was done. mthout Supervisory Control, one could get a problem during a week-end, be unable to register It before Monday and the damage dory could set the station out of service for a long nerlod of time. x. j Page 2 With the heir of Kan Krider from the Traffic Signal Shop we have looked int-r several foes of telometering. Mchcry, Assistant City Engineer FROM: Leiv G. Eriksen Subject: Cottonwood Grove Liftstation As requested a study has been made on Cottonwood Grove liftstation. The condition of this station is bad and it is recommended that immediate action will be taken to correct the present condition (Ref. Memo March 19, 1969, copy attached). After consulting with y„u, Dick Houghton, Matt Cole, James N. Mc Beth of Pacific Pumping Co. and John S. Shute of Service Controls Lai,^^any, -- Portland I have collected the 'lowing recommendations and information. 1) Purchase and instill .I motor & pump. 2) Install new controls 3) Remove existing motor & pump, overhaul, repair & reinstall 4) Connect f, .ed sewer line to Metro line. !'ew motor & pump should be ordered as soon as possible. It is recommended that a 5 HP 1200 rpm 3 B with a column length of 8' sump depth would be the ._ost suitable for this station (See appendix) (See attached specifications). hr a been checking into two control systems. One for connection into the e _,ng telemetering system located at the water shop. This will be an identical unit to the one located at Honey Dew School liftstation. The estiimted price on this system (given via 'phone April 9-69 by John S. Shute of Service Control) would be $3,647.50 if City forces would furnish material and install the concrete base and underground conduits. Estimated delivery time would be 60 days. , The recommended control system would be Flygt level controller with a weather- proof outside control unit. (See attached specifications) This control system can- not be connected to the 'elemetering system, but after studying the literature and the specific-tions on this system I feel that the only thing which could stop normal operation wc,ld be a pov,r f,_'lure, which would stop operation of any other control system too. This system wi,l also be installed at the new Honey Creek liftstation. _i -*tir 2. y ' w9 s Cottonwood Grove liftstation is installed with ar overflcw, and even • .g,"' if we would like to min+mire the use of this, the station would not be over- ,,,..'_P .. flooded should an emergency occur, 'r As soon as the new motor, pump and control unit are installed the existing motor and pp g *s - pump should be removed and sent to the supplier's overhauling facilities a for the necessary repair, and be re-installed in the station when this is completed. permission has been given by Metro to connect this liftstation into Metro's line (See attached copy). 'st rt , By connecting to Metro as shown on attached map the length of the forced sr - sewer wo,ld be approximately 117' compared to the present approximately 2300' and f the pumps would pump aoains a 25' head compared to present 38' head. Le- G. Eri ksenv G LGE;mj i k APPENDIX i By eliminating approximately 2180' and the head from 38' to 25' a 3 HP motor could be used but this would not leave any safety operation -1 area and under heavy workload the possibilities that the motor could stop, are present. The cost difference between a 5 HP and a 3 HP would be approximately $133.00 but modification on existing pump to meet a similar operation area would amount to approximately $50.00. A total saving by using a 3 HP would be approximately $80.00. I would recommend that a 5 HP motor be purchased to elimina'.e additional i modification on existing pump and to provide a safety zone if any foreign material should get into the pump and subject the pump to a heavy workload for 3 short time. As mentioned the possibilities that a 3 HP could stop will 1, be eliminated by using a 5 HP motor. x I k i is xlc J 1 ESTIMATE 1) Paco 4" BW Type NC Ij=np with 5 HP, 1200 rpm 3 b motor $1,059.00 with subplate 6 with column length for 8" sump depth (See attached specification) 2) Paco Type EMA duplex panel, .with Flygt level controller $1,054.00 (See attached specificdtion) 3) Estimated cost for overhaul, repair 8 freight _$ 380.00 _ q$ Estimated cost for tieing into Metro $ 500.00 r TOTAL $2,993.00 Plus Washington State Sales Tax i An additional allowance should be provided for installation of pump motor, etc. to be done by City forces. ti Q iYgr: i I i f I" i i March 19, 1969 TO: Uert Mcfienry FROM: leiv Erikson i The following is a brief description of condition and reeoamendations on Cotton Grove Lift "tation (riviera Ants.)
