Thus the endwall covering and corrector com"ents must carry the design loads. Vertical dead, live, and wind uplift loads are delivered by the purlins, through the rake girt, to the endwall panels which support them by column action. Endwall wind loads are carried by the beam strength of the endwall panels. That portion of the sidewall wind delivered to the plane of the endwall is resisted by the endwall covering diaphragm strength. Because of the complex nature of this design and the rigorous demands made of the endwall panels, Its application is restricted to the following: 1. STEELOk Sculptures panels only. 2. The principal axes of Z-shaped cross sections are not parallel ITM7980 and perpendicular to the plane of the web as is the case IN doubly symmetrical cross sections. As a result, such sections have a Armco tendency to twist when laded in the plane of the web. To counter- Vesearch 6 act this tendency, adjacent purlins are essentially made "self- bracing• by alternating their orientations, i.e., one placed with O 335 the top flange pointing toward the building ridge, the adjacent 3/29/78 purlin placed with the top flange puinti no toward the building eave. 2. The most favorable orientation for a Z section oupportiaa vertical lads is achieved with the top flange pointing up-slope (toward the ridge). Because of the arrangement described to paragraph (1) above, half of the purlin are oriented with their top flanges Pointing down-slope. To compensate for this, allowable bending stresses in the flange for gravity lading only are multiplied by an "FB Factor." This factor takes into account that maximum bending stresses due to biaxial bending of purlin oriented "down-slope" are larger than calculated. The "F8 Factor" decreases with increasing roof slope. At a roof slope of 1:36 its value is 0.98. (Fb - 29.4 for tk > .056 and Fb • 26.5 for t - .056)• AISI 3.4.2 3. The allowable compressive bending stresses for beams laterally supported on one flange only, such as the case of purlins to which roof panels are attached, are not defined in the 1968 Edition of the AISI Specification. Extensive analytical and experimental work is currently underway to develop appropriate criteria. In the absence of these, results of Armco tests simulating actual purlin lnstallatioas were used to establish the following allowable stresses: a) Gravity lads with no purlin spacers - 34 ksi b) Gravity lads with purlin spacers at 1/3 ,mints - 41 ksi c) Mind loads with no purlin spacers - 25 ksi d) Wind lads with purlin spacers at 1/3 points - 30 ksi • Fb was calculated with the web's outermost fibers stessed at Fb,. • INIT DATE: .,..,, .... PAGE: EMEM ARMCO Armco Bwldirq Srsums v _ REFERENCE_ Stresses (a) & (D) apply only to CT construction while (c) and (d) apply to both CF and TF Coestructton. These allowable stresses are limiting valves Intended to prevent failure by instability. 411 stress limitations of the AISI Specification are also satisfied and often controllad. Additional criteria Aopllid to Zee Puriins As follows: 1. With TF construction, the roof diaphrayn carries that coamonent of vertical lad In the plans of the roof. 2- Purlin sours are Bonet! repaired to orovide Nrlin SBC 110 stability against wirwl uplift and axial forces. Our wires installed for a switching relay have been connected into the new telemetry equipment (not by us) and we are at a loss of how Renton wants the auto transfer switch connected to the telemetry equipment. Please schedule a meeting with yourself and your electrical engineer and us to resolve this problem. We plan to be ' finished with the building and all electrical this week. While the UBC provides for a 20 ibs. per q. ft., and the Penton Building Department provides for a 25 Its. per sq. ft. , the contract Specifications clearly put the responsibility on your firm to provide this design load per City of Renton requirements. Bergstrom Engineering Supervisor 'JAN 2 1886 Public 'Forks Department 200 Mill Rvenue South Renton, MA 98055 Dear Bob: John is off on vacation, however, prior to his leaving, he advised me that the City of Renton desired a snow load of 25 Pounds per square foot to be placed on the proposed building for the portable electric. generatir. The Uniform Building Code of 1982 specifies a live load loading of 20 pounds per square foot with an 80 MPH wind speed load. There is ro provision in the Uniform Building Code for a Snow-live load greater than 20 pounds per square foot. The Uniform Building Code states that the local building official will establish the snow loading when such load exceeds 20 pounds per square foot. Consequently, I spoke to Jim Hanson of the Renton Building Department, and asked him how they derived the 25 pound per square foot snow load. He stated it was Renton's practice to utilize a 25 pound per square foot snow load. It is difficult for me to believe that 48 inches of snow will accumulate i the Renton area. However, I don't want to argue that poin, at this time. My basic feeling is that if a load greater than specified by the Uniform Building Code was to be imposed on the Rentcn generator storage shed that Such a load should have been specified in the contract documents. The load was not specified. I spoke to Armco today and confirmed the fact that the building wAch was ordered and is presently loaded on a truck will not take a 25 pound snow load in conjunction with the other loads and still maintain the 6' percent safety factor. Our only solution to the problem is '.o purchase additional perlins and develop a new set of calculations. Armco informs me that they can load the additional perlins on the truck and develop a new set of calculations. I have authorized Armco to load the perlins and to develop the new calculations . They expect that the calculations will be in our hands by Friday, January 3, ENGINEERING 1 CONSTRUCTION / MANAGEMEN' 1986. We should receive the building with the additional perlins by that time also. We are hereby requesting a channe order to cover the additional cost of perlins and calculations in the amount of $342.00 plus sales tax. It you have any questions concerning this matter, Please call . Thank you, Very Truly Yours, Dennis A. Burke, P.E. MA 98055 RE: PORTABLE GENERATOR CONTRACT N-815 ELECTRICAL CLARIFICATIONS Dear Bob: Our Electrician has met with the Electrical Engineer (Thomas Leonidas) for clarification of the following: Item WE 1. Print and Specs do not show terminal intertie connecTTons with existing equipment. Item 2. Sequence Relay Diagram (sheet C of 4) was incomplete as to wiring and relay operation to do the functions desired. Item 3. Telemetering interties and responsibilities are not e scr ed. The results of meeting on each item is stated as follows: Item 1. Electrical Engineer did not know where interties s ou be but could figure it out. He wanted RH2 Engineering and City Engineers to varify connections. Puget's position is that we must know the wires/terminal posts to tie into for circuitry. Item 2. Sequine Relay Diagram was connected to make sense and we can wire up. Item 3. The Electrical Engineer states that we need to connec into the new telemetry equipment which at present has not been installed. According to construction plans (sheet 3 of 4) if new telemetry equipment is not installed by construction time then we are to connect to existing telemetry. We need to know the intertie connection points on old equipment. No,j 3r?t4 -- r-LvtAa., t k. tiaJ i*14sr ENGINEERING ; CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT The Telemetry connection controls the Automatic Transfer Switch operations of the able so there is a problem of not being to connect until new equipment is installed. Delays may result. Please advise as these items are going to prevent us from completing the job and could cause additional cost to the Project. Power Systems Letter, Item No, 2 We require that a full bed plate (decking) be provided as specified. It is our experience that road mist entering the trailer enclosure from the bottom creates a dirty and oily engine qenerator assembly. Since the electrical equipment in the enclosure is not housed in a Nema 4 enclosure, the water also creates a potential electrical hazard. All of the fumes generated by the diesel engine are lighter than air and, therefore, would not exit the enclosure through the bottom. We are not concerned about spilled liquids on the decking since the fuel filler assembly is required to he lrcated exterior to the housing, 3. It is thus necessary that I clarify the situation. The true events occured as follows: 1 . 1 was at the worksite on Wednesday until 12:30 assisting in setting the forms. We ,vere setting the forms and had reinforcing steel cut all in accordance with the original drawings since no one had advised us that RH2 Engineeers had revised the drawings earlier to meet Renton Building Department requirements. 2. After returning to the office and ordering concrete for 8:30 a.m. Thursday I received a call from our foreman who stated that someone from RH2 visited the site and stated that the drawings were revised. His visit was on or about 2:30 pm. . 3. I immediately called your office four times between 3:00 and 4:30, 1 received no response. I called RH2 twice during the same period. 4. On or about 4:30 1 received a returned call from your secretary stating that we could pick up plans at RH2 Engineering. 5. 1 again called RH2 Engineering and contacted Dan. He stated that you had all the drawings and the revised mvlar. Dan also told me the changes that were being made. I developed our own sketch of the revised footing. ENGINEERING / CONSTRUCTION , MANAGEMENT 6. 1 again called your office and finally got in touch with you and discussed the change. 7. We subsequently picked up the extra 35 bars and revised the forms on Thursday morning. Given the preceeding facts it is difficult for me to accept the inditetment contained in your letter.
