NARRATIVE
On 09/21/2025 at about 0933 hours I was working uniform marked patrol as 1 R23 when I heard the
sounds of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of NE 12 St/Kirkland Ave NE. I looked toward
the intersection and saw Unit 1 stopped on the sidewalk on the northwest corner of the intersection,
and Unit 2 was stopped along Kirkland Ave NE just north of the intersection. Both drivers appeared
shocked by the collision, and I requested the Renton Fire Department (RFD) respond to evaluate the
drivers. Driver 2 complained of a headache and back pain, and she was transported to the Valley
Medical Center for further evaluation. Unit 2 was driven from the roadway and parked in the parking
lot at RFD station 12 (1209 Kirkland Ave NE). Driver 1 did not report any injuries, and he was able to
drive his vehicle from the scene. No witnesses came forward, and neither vehicle had additional
passengers.
Driver 1: Tyke D. Sykes. Unit 1: Black colored 2010 Toyota Prius with Washington state license
plate BLZ0623.
Driver 2: Lan Thi Tran. Unit 2: Grey colored 4 door 2010 Honda Civic with Washington state license
plate ABV0750.
I spoke to Driver 1, and he explained that he was traveling westbound on NE 12 St as he approached
the intersection at Kirkland Ave NE. Driver 1 admitted he did not notice the visible stop sign at the
intersection, and that he drove through the intersection without stopping before the stop sign. As Unit
1 entered the intersection both Unit 1 and Unit 2 collided. Unit 1 had damage to the driver side of the
vehicle.
Driver 2 spoke some English, but her primary language was Vietnamese. I called the language line
and enlisted the assistance of a Vietnamese interpreter. Driver 2 explained that she was traveling
northbound on Kirkland Ave NE as she approached the intersection at NE 12 St. Driver 2 admitted
she did not stop at the visible stop sign, but said she drove slowly through the intersection. As Unit 2
drove through the intersection both Unit 2 and Unit 1 collided. Unit 2 had damage to the front end of
the vehicle, and the collision appeared to forcefully remove the front bumper from the front end of the
vehicle.
The front end of Unit 2 and the driver side of Unit 1 collided in the intersection after both drivers failed
to stop at the visible stop signs in their respected lanes of travel. Both vehicles sustained damage,
but they were able to be driven from the roadway. Neither driver had visible injuries, but Driver 2
complained of a headache and back pain. Driver 2 was taken by ambulance to Valley Medical Center
for further evaluation. I gave both drivers a Renton PD business card with the case number.
The actions of both drivers (both admitting they did not stop at the stop sign) appeared to contribute
to the circumstances of the collision.
