Subject: BYRON JACKSON PUMP SERIAL NO. 681-S-0076. WELL #8,
DEEPWELL LINESHAFT TURBINE.
Gentlemen:
Upon visiting the job site with Ron Olson to inspect the problem with
the above subject pump involving leaking around the packing due to a
grooved headshaft, I found upon inspection, the headshaft was worn at
the packing area. However, this does not warrant removal.
Our advise to the solution of your problem is to take out all the old
packing and cage rings. Clean the shaft and rings as well as possible
and install new packing into the stuffing box with rings. After several
hours of operation, tighten down packing gland to obtain desired leakage
of water. Please note that some water must leak through the packing
gland in order to lubricate the stuffing box.
The shaft wear on the headshaft as observed, should not cause any problems
with leakage of the stuffing box. When it does, in the future, the City
must pull the pump in order to turn the 416 stainless steel headshaft end
for end for a new bearing surface coin- through the stu£f4ng box.
The non-reverse ratchet assembly was i—ted to be sliohtly noisy. Upon
taking off the motor cap to expose the ratchet assembly, the assembly
was noted to be slightly grindy and should be removed and cleaned with
solvent. The dismantelinq of the ratchet assembly does not effect the
PUMP setting. First remove the three large bolts on the ratchet assembly,
then lift the entire assembly off the motor and clean. When reinstalling
the ratchet assembly, take some time to turn the ratchet assembly numerous
times with the motor in order to insure it's Droper working operation.
