A e , a May 23, 1973 TO: Dick Houghton FROM: Bob Puhich SUBJECT: Water Line Break on 84th Avenue S. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This leak was caused by inadequate design due to different makes of pipe, thin wall steel to a reduced 12" cast iron with the reducer against the flow. The crew was working against high pressure at the base of a steep hill with a gas main wit tin six inches of cast iron main, which forced steel main to be sprung to make the connection. Dresser coupling was an adjustable type which allowed play in the fittings. Two other tie-ins were made on the same job on the same day, one was from 12" cast iron to 8" steel; the other was 8" cast icon to 6" steel. The water crews were working in conjunction with a contractor, whose estimation of t±me was hours wrong. The time period was from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. It is advised that all tie-ins of different classes and types of pip, be made from pipe to pipe, not from fitting to pipe. This will maintain enough rigidity to hold it d. ring pressure surges. r Mp:ap 1 4 S June 5, 1973 TO: W.,rren Gonnason FROM: Dick Houghton SUBJECT: Water Main Break on 84th Ave. S., March 28, 1973 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- At tice particular point where the break occurred, there was a reducer from 12" / cast iron down to 8", and a dresser cu ,pling, which went from the 8" cast iron to 8" steel. This, at best, is an unsatisfactory connection. Also, there was a gas line very near the 8" steel line and we had to clear the portion of the old 8" steel that vas abandoned and the alinement of the two pipes wau not to be considered good for a proper connection. This connection should not really be considered as unusual because we have made many others of tite same nature and have had no problems prior to this tive. In looking at the matter, we can probably alleviate any future problems by putting a reducer a couple of lengths back down the pipe and running addi- tional lengths of 8" to where the connection was made between the cast iron and tice steel pipe. Alvo, the hydraulic thrust for the pressure was going in the direction of the reducer, which may have added to the problem.
