NARRATIVE
CC 25-8974
This incident was captured on my body worn video camera. This report is a summary of events that
occurred and is not an exact sequencing of events. Statements have been paraphrased and
summarized.
On 10/16/2025, 1 working as a police officer in the city of Renton. At approximately 1850 hours, I was
dispatched to a motor vehicle collision at 1700 Maple Valley Highway, in the City of Renton, King
County, Washington.
According to the notes in the call, it was a vehicle versus pedestrian collision with unknown injuries.
I arrived on scene and spoke with both parties. Unit 2 was standing on the sidewalk on the south side
of the roadway with his bicycle. Unit 1 and circled around and was parked facing eastbound on the
Maple Valley Highway.
Pre-Collision
Unit 2 stated that he had been on the north side of the Maple Valley Highway, which runs from east to
west. Unit 2 had crossed the intersection with his bicycle in a spot where there was no marked
intersection. Unit 2 hopped over the median and continued into the eastbound lanes of Maple Valley
Highway
Unit 2 stated he believed he at fault for the collision because he had crossed the roadway in a spot
where there was no marked pedestrian crossing.
Driver 1, who was driving Unit 1, stated she was driving eastbound on the Maple Valley Highway in
the far-left lane of travel. Driver 1 stated she believed to be travelling approximately 35mph.
Collision
Unit 2 stated he checked and, believing there were no vehicles on the roadway, walked southbound,
entering the far-left lane of eastbound traffic. Unit 2 was struck by Unit 1, causing pain to his right
hand and significantly damaging his bicycle. Unit 2 continued across the roadway and stopped on
south side of the Maple Valley Highway.
Driver 1 stated as she was driving eastbound, she did not see Unit 2 until her vehicle struck him.
Injuries
Unit 2 complained of minor soreness to his right hand and arm. Unit 2 was assessed and cleared by
Renton Fire Department at the scene.
Driver 1 stated she was not injured.
Vehicle Disposition
The bicycle Unit 2 was in possession of was severely damaged. The handlebar was missing, and the
front wheel was extensively bent.
Unit 1 had multiple scratches on the left driver's side front quarter panel, running the length of the
front wheel well. No other damage was observed.
Proximate Cause
Based on Unit 2 crossing the intersection at a spot where there was no marked pedestrian crossing,
and subsequently being struck by Unit 1, 1 determined the proximate cause of the collision being Unit
2 not crossing a roadway within a marked crosswalk.
