At 0746 hours I was dispatched to a report of a two-vehicle, blocking collision with injury in the intersection of NE Sunset Blvd and Anacortes Ave NE Renton/King/WA. Officer Onishi arrived on scene before me and advised RRFA needed to respond for a complaint of head pain. He also requested two tows to remove the vehicles from the scene. I arrived on scene and spoke with John J Miller DOB: 7/20/1978, who was driving a 2021 Subaru Ascent WA/BYS6976 (Unit 1). John said that he had entered the intersection going north on Anacortes Ave to turn west onto NE Sunset. He said that his light was green turning yellow when he entered the intersection and was struck by Unit 2. There was damage the rear driver side passenger door and quarter panel. The side airbag had deployed inside the Subaru. John had a complaint of pain to his left side from the airbag and was evaluated and cleared by RRFA on scene. The driver of the 2012 Toyota Rav4 WA/BGG6781 (Unit 2), was identified by her WADL as Jennifer S Johnson DOB: 2/23/1961. Jennifer said that she was driving east on NE Sunset Blvd in the #2 lane. She said that her light was either green or yellow when she entered the intersection and struck Unit 1. There was heavy damage to the front end of the Toyota and the front airbag had deployed. Jennifer had a complaint of pain to her chest and wrists, she was evaluated and cleared by RRFA on scene. Gene Meyers Towing removed both vehicles from the scene. I was sent surveillance video from the business on the northeast corner of the intersection at 4444 NE Sunset Blvd. The camera faced south onto the intersection; the traffic signals are not visible, but the collision is captured. The surveillance shows that westbound traffic stopped and traffic driving north on Anacortes to turn west on NE Sunset travelling through the intersection. Several vehicles entered the intersection and turned west. You can then see Unit 1 enter the intersection to turn west. Unit 2 approaches from the west, enters the intersection, and collides with Unit 2. Based on the vehicles entering the intersection from Anacortes and the vehicles stopping at the light on westbound Sunset, it appears likely that Unit 1 had a green or yellow light when he entered the intersection and Unit 2 had a red. I completed Sector citation #5A0882621 for RCW 46.61.055.3A for Vehicle Entering Intersection on Steady Red. This citation should be mailed to Jennifer. I uploaded the footage to Axon Evidence.
