The pavement surface is in good shape with very little distress noted. A 500 foot sample section was surveyed in detail which revealed two or three minor cracks and a few small spalled areas along joints. The joints, on the other hand are in poor condition throughout the concrete surfaced section. The joint sealant is hard and brittle and has come out of the joints in some places. There is grass growing in many of the joints. The remaining 4543 feet of the runway has an asphalt surface. A detailed condition survey was made in four different sample sections: 10+00 to 15+00; 26+00 to 30+00; 36+00 to 40+00; and 45+00 to 49+00. The sample sections covered the full width of the runway. The sample areas were typical of the pavement's condition throughout the runway length. The overall condition of the asphalt portion of the runway is fair to poor on the north end and changes to poor condition going toward the south end. The typical distresses found were: o alligator or fatigue cracking o longitudinal cracking o transverse cracking o diagonal cracking o patching The fatigue cracks were observed in the wheel paths on either side of the taxi -stripe at the intersection of Taxiways D & K. The cracks were generally low to medium severity and occurred for the full width of the runway. Low severity fatigue cracking was also noticed in the wheel paths on either side of the runway centerline for a short distance on the south end of the runway. The majority of longitudinal cracks observed on the runway coincided with the longitudinal construction joints and occurred throughout the length of the asphalt section of the runway. The sample section in the middle of the runway length indicated the highest extent of longitudinal cracking which occurred on all paving joints for the majority of the sample length. The sample areas on either end of the runway showed a relatively low extent of the longitudinal cracking. The cracks noted ranged from low to high severity. A low extent of transverse cracking was observed on the asphalt surface. Most of the cracks were one to ten feet long and ranged from low to high severity. There were several high severity transverse cracks which extended the full width of the runway. Based on a core taken on one of these cracks, the full width cracks seem to be reflection cracks which have occurred due to a crack or joint in the underlying PCC. Several medium to high severity diagonal cracks were also noted. These cracks were almost full width of the runway. Two patches were found in the sample sections. The patches are deteriorated with numerous longitudinal & transverse cracks. TAXIWAY A / WEST RAMP A detailed condition survey was performed for three sample sections along the taxiway: Sta. 3+00 to 8+00 (south end of taxiway), 20+00 to 25+00 (center of taxiway), and 37+00 to 41+00 (north end of taxiway). Overall, the asphalt -surfaced taxiway appeared in fair to poor condition. The distress noted in the sample sections was fairly consistent and included the following: * CONDITION SURVEY CONDUCTED OCTOBER 1986 o longitudinal cracking o transverse cracking o patching The longitudinal cracking is mostly at longitudinal construction joints. The cracks range in severity from low to high. About one-half of the construction joints show some degree of longitudinal cracking. The transverse cracking was observed throughout the taxiway length. However, the cracks were relatively short, usually going through one or two paving lanes only. The severity levels ranged from low to high. Some relatively small patches were observed. The patches appeared to be in fair to good condition. A portion of the taxiway has been removed and replaced on the east side of the centerline. This new surface is in very good condition. TAXIWAY B Overall the asphalt -surfaced taxiway is in fair to poor condition with the exception of some newly placed pavement west of the taxiway centerline. The new pavement is in very good condition. Several types of cracking were apparent on the older portion of the taxiway: longitudinal, transverse and diagonal. There were several high severity transverse cracks that extended the full width of the taxiway. The remaining cracks were from one foot to fifty -feet in length and ranged from low to high severity. TAXIWAY C. The taxiway is asphalt surfaced and in fair to poor condition. A number of moderate to high severity transverse cracks are present which are nearly the full width of the taxiway.
