BRH 48406BA Dear Greg: I have investigaterl the extension of t` inch water main over the existing 60 inch storm drain at th ,Lraection of S.W. 7th and futu,e Natches Avenue S.W. This is toe project which you and Bob Roed discussed by phone several days ago. I found that the present utility contractor working on the project for Metro has extended the new 12 inch water main to the point shown in red on the attached plan. This puts the end of the water main three or four feet past the edge of the new asphalt hoing installed for the extension of S.W. 7th Street (sec attached Plan) . I also found that there is a lara" drainage Swale in the north side of the existing 60 inch stor drain line. If the water main was extended over the top of the existing 60 inch line the end of the main would stick out into mid-air unless extensive filling was done. Since the end of the 12 inch water main has been installed past the edge of the asphalt and there is the probler, of the drainage Swale on the north side of the 60 inch storm drain pipe, we would like to recommend that this crossing be made when Natches Avenue S.W, is constructed. It you have any questions regarding the matt Thank ycu. ef's .l lease call. Sincerely, Ronald G. Goldy, f'.E. Re: Fire Flow Capability for the Proposed Burlington Park Technical Center Dear Mr. Roed: With reference to our conversation regarding the fire flow capability of the City of Renton Water System to supply the proposed Earlington Park Technical Center, we submit the following information, The available fire flowratea listed in the letter cf December 14, 1981, are correct. Itnwever, It is important to note that the location of two of the simulated fires were in the center of 8-inch and 12-Inch loops. At this location, the flow and velocity distribution between both •idea of the loop was evenly divided thereby resulting in the lowest velocities under the ausumed conditions. The flow and velocity distribution for the three analyses are as follows; Velocity Flow Analysis Distribution Distribution Loop Number. (fpc) For Each Plpellne (gpm) For Each Pipeline Diameter In) 1 10.3, 9.9 1619, 1542 811 ` 1.0.7, 7.3 1669, 1485 61, 3 15.1, 6.2 2372, 981 B.. If the two simulated fires had not been in the center of the loops, as was the case for Analysis 03, the flow and velocity distribution wild then be inbalanced, resulting in higher velocities with possible undesirable conse fences. Although these flowrates are available throughout the loops, these velocities are potentially dangerous and ure not recommended. The floe and velocity distribution is dependent 3W- 120th Avenue N.E Suite 219. Bellevue,We.VM (2a8)461g686 Bu,h, Reed L Hitchings, P.S. Re: Fire Flow Capability for the Proposed Earlington Park Technical Center Dear Mr. Roed. This letter -,, izes the fire flow capabilities of the City of Renton's water system to s,jpply the proposed Earlington Park Technical Center. Three computer analyses simulating a fire at various locations in the development were performed for the purpose of determining the fire-flow capability of the City's system. The analyses were based upon 12-inch main extensions on Powell Avenue S.E. aad Naches Avenue S.E., and 8-inch loops throughout the development. Results of the analysis indicate that the available fire flows in the development are as follows: Analysiti Location Available Residual Number of Fire Fire Flow Pressure --- (gpm) -- (psi) — 1 Building 10 3161 40.9 2 Building 5 3154 40.9 3 Building 24 3353 41.0 I 300 9th 0-venue N E Suite 219. A s c.mmary of th, 0; --rational conditions used in the analyses is as 'ollows: 0 minimum service pressure of 3o psi in the service area dur;n0 normal demands and 20 psi during fire demands. 0 wells 1, 2, and 3 are in operation dhile well 8 is Out of service, 0 Springbrook Springs is supplying the system at 1300 gpm, o Talbrt Hill pump station is operating at 1500 gpm, o The Mt. T 1s area was chosen for study because it contains the largest buildings and thus has the largest fire flow requirements. It also has th - ;ongest run of pipe between connections to the existing system. The system Is shown on attached sheet 3 of 3. In studving this loop two alternate flow conditions were Investigated. In alternate No. 1 It was assumed that the water would be supplied to the loop only from the connection at the Intersection of Pcweli Avenue F.W. and S.M. 7th Street. Sae sheet 1 of 3 for thsse calculations. In alternate No. 2 it was assumed that the water w-luld be supplied 10 the loop only from the connection et the Best property line. $00 sheet 2 of 3 for these calculations. The maximum flow required from -he system In each alternative is 1000 gpm from each of the three hydrants on the north 8" line. This flow satisfies the 3000 gpm fire flow established by the Renton Fire Department for Building No. 5 From the calculations, alternate No. 2 Is the worst case because a larger percentage of the flow has to gc through the tl diamete line No. 4. The head lose In the loop for this alternative Is 12 psi and the highest velocity Is 7.10 ft/sec. In Ilne No. 4. Both these quantltles are within normal limit*. therefore the 8" diameter loop is acceptable. If you have any quo stlons regarding these calculations please 9lv3 me a call . Thank you.
