SCOPE: This section specifies ductile iron pipe, ductile or gray iron fittings, gaskets, and cast iron couplings. B. DEFINITION: Where cast iron pipe is specified , the term and symbol shall mean ductile iron pipe . 1.02 REFERENCES This section references the latest revision of the following documents. They are a part of this section as specified and modified. In case of conflict hetween the requirements of this section and those of the listed documents, the requirements of this section shall prevail . Piping layout drawings which include this piping shall be submitted by plant area in accordance with 15055-1 .03. 2. Ca'_ culations and drawings for anchors. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 GENERAL Pipe design , materials and manufacture shall comply with the following documents : Item Document Thickness design AWWA C150 Manufacturing requirements Water or other liquid AWWA C151 Gas ANSI 21. 52 Gravity service pipe ASTM A716 Joints Rubber gasket AWWA C111 Threaded flange AWWA C115 Fittings AWWA C110 Cement mortar lining AWWA C104 15062-2 2.02 2.02 PIPE All ductile iron pipe shall be ANSI 21 .51 and shall be ductile iron pipe, Class 52. Pipe shall be cement lined a•d seal coated in accordance with ANSI A-21.4. 2. 03 GASKETS Gasket stock shall be a synthetic rubber compound in which the elastomer is neoprene. The compound shall contain not less than 50 percent by volume neoprene and shall be free from factice , reclaimed rubber and other deleterious substances. In addition, gaskets shall comply with AWWA C111. 2.04 FLANGE ASSEMBLIES Flange assemblies shall be provided where required. Corrosion-resistant, stainless steel bolts and nuts for use with ductile iron joints are an acceptanle substitute for alloyed bolts and nuts. Galvanized or cadmium-plated steel bolts and nuts are not acceptable substitutes for stainless steel . 2.05 JOINTS A. PUSH-ON AND MECHANICAL JOINTS: Push-on joints may be utilized for pipe sections not requiring joint restraints. For pipe sections requiring restrained joints via tie rods , mechanical joints must be used . The plain ends of push-on pipe and mechanical joint pipe shall be marked with paint to show the required depth of penetration for making the joint. B. MECHANICALLY RESTRAINED JOINTS: Where required , all mechanically restrained pipe in the CW piping section shall be restrained with tie rods as shown on the attached City of Renton Standard Plan. ' Where required in all other piping systems, joint restraint shall be of the lugged , welded retainer ring , or keyed type as approved by the Construction Manager. Restrained joints which employ set screws or concrete thrust anchors are not acceptable. Rods for the lugged type shall be in accordance with AWWA Mll, Figures 19 . 15 and 19 . 16 , and Tables 19.7 and 19 .8. e2.06 FITTINGS Ends shall be flanged , mechanical joint or push-on to suit the conditions specified . Gray cast iron fittings may be substituted 15062-3 2.06 for ductile iron fittings provided they conform to the specified requirements- All fittings shall be rated for a working pressure fe re fittings requiring restrained joints shall nave 2 ir psi . All mechanical joints. 2.0 CEMENT MORTAR LINING Interior surfaces shall be cement mortar ,pe il1 ac cordance nce olo with AWWA C104 . Couplings shall be rated for a working pressure of 250 psi . 2. 10 TRACFR TAPE Tracer tape shall be 6 inches wide , yellow and made of inert for direct lengthl Tape shall be capable plastic material suitable of stretching to twice its originalThe first message Two messages shall he printed on the tape • IPE BURIED BELOW" with shall read "CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION WATER PThe second message hall bold letters approximately 2 inches high. _ read "CALL RENTON TREATMENT PLANT highbPEgothEmessages2shall be printed letters approximately / at maximum intervals of 2 feet. 2. 11 PRODUCT DATA In accordance with paragraph 00710-4 .02, the Contractor shall provide the following : a has been tested 1. Certification that each length hasfsatisfactorily passed pipphysically for ductility and such tests . I 15062-4 2. 11 2. Certifications specified in the following documents: AWWA C151, paragraph 51-4.2 ANSI 21.52, paragraph 52-4.2 ASTM A716, paragraph 4.2 AWWA C110, paragraph 10-4.3 AWWA C111, paragraph 11-5. 1 ( including gasket material ) AWWA C115 , paragraph 15-3.2 PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 GENERAL Piping runs specified on the drawings shall be followed as closely as possible . Proposed deviations shall be submitted in accordance with Section 01300. All ductile iron pipe shall be installed in accordance with AWWA C600. City of Renton standards (see attachcJ ) apply only to the CW piping system. The Contractor shall coordinate all work related to the CW piping system with the City of Renton, including installation, testing, and disinfection. 3.02 ANCFJRAGE In general bends and teeii in all buried ductile iron pressure piping systems shall be anchored by means of restrained joints. Restrained joint length shall be as required for the test pressure shown in the PIPESPEC. The Contractor shall submit calculations in accordance with paragraph 15062-1.03 showing the type of restrained joint proposed and the length of the pipe run on which restrained joints are required. For bends and tees in the CW piping system, anchorage must conform to the requirements of the City of Renton. Unless otherwise specified, concrete thrust blocks shall be utilized in accordance with City of Renton's Standard Plans. Thrust blocks shall be designed for a pipeline pressure of 250 psi with a soil safe bearing load capacity of 2,000 psf . Calculations and drawings for proposed alternative anchorage shall be provided in accordance with paragraph 15062-1.03. CW piping system joint restraint in the form of tie rods is also required at hydrants and special fittings as indicated on the drawings. Tie rod restraints shall conform to the City of Renton standards. 15062-5 3.03 3 .03 FLEXIBILITY Unless otherwise specified, piping 2 inches in diameter and larger passing from concrete to earth snall be provided at pipe couplings or flexible joints as specified within 3 feet of the structure. Where required for resistance to pressure, mechanical couplings shall be reetrained in accordance with AWWA Mll, Figures 19. 15 and 19. 16, and Tables 19.7 and 19.8 . 3.04 ACCEPTANCE TESTING Hydrostatic pressure tests shall be conducted on all ductile iron Piping and acceptability determined in accordance with AWWA C600. In addition, th>_ CW piping system shall be tested in accordance with the regulations of the City of Renton ante in the presence of a representative of the City of Renton. Final plant operational testing of lines utilizing process fluids shall be in accordance with Section 01660. 3.05 POLYETHYLENE TUBE All buried ductile iron piping shall be encased in two layers of polyethylene. Installation of polyethylene shall be as specified in ANSI A21.5, Section 5-4. 2. 1 and these specifications. Buried pipe, fittings, valves, and couplings shall be wrapped. Fittings that require concrete blocking shall be wrapped prior to pla--ing the concrete. The polyethylene tube seams and overlaps shall be wrapped and held in place by adhesive tape. 3 .06 CHLORINATION AND DISINFECTIO0 Upon completion of all testing, the Contractor shall flush and disinfect the CW piping system installed under this contract in accordance with AWWA Standard C601 and the regulations of the City 01 ,,",enton and in the presence of a representative of the City of Renton. Temporary end caps and valved 2-inch blow-offs shall be provided where new CW piping is to be connected to existing CW lines to allow flushing and disinfection to take place prior to connecting the new piping with the existing. The material shall be free from peat , wood, roots, bark, debris, garbage, rubbish or other extraneous material . The maximum size of stone shall not exceed 6 inches. The filter fabric shall be Mirafi 700X or equal. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 GENERAL A. CONTROL OF WATER: See Section 02400. B. OVEREXCAVATION: Where the undisturbed condition of natural soils is inadequate for support of the planned construction, the Construction Manager will direct the Contractor to overexcavate to adequate supporting soils. The excavated space shall be filled to the specified ' elevation with backfill. The overexcavated space under footings may be filled with Type E concrete. The quantity and placement of such material will be paid for as extra work . C. EXCAVATED MATERIAL: Unless otherwise specified, suitable ex.e:ss excavated material ( fill) shall be disposed of in the spoil areas shown and as directed by the Construction Manager. Select structural fill removed for structural excavation or final grading or paving shall be stock- ' piled outside of the existing structural filled area. Unsuitable excavated materials such as peat shall be disposed of off-site unless otherwise directed by the Construction Manager. The Contractor shall satisfy himself that there is sufficient ' material for the completion of the embankments before disposing of any material inside or outside the site. Shortage of material ' caused by premature disposal of any material by the Contractor shall be replaced by the Contractor at his own expense. 02200-6 ' 3.01 C Material shall not be stockpiled on the existing structural filled area. In addition, material shall not be stockpiled to a depth greater than 5 feet above foundation grade, within 25 feet of any excavation or structure. The Contractor shall use construction methods which preserve the stability of the soil adjacent to any excavation. D. BORROW MATERIAL: If the quantitl of acceptable material from excavation is not sufficient to construct the embankments required by the work, the quantity of material needed to complete the embankments shall be available from the spoils area as directed by the Construction Manager. E. HAULING AND TRAFFIC PATTERNS: When hauling is done over highways or city streets, the loads shall be trimmed and the vehicle shelf areas shall be cleaned after each loading . The loads shall be watered after trimming to minimize dust . The Contractor shall maintain traffic patterns in the existing structural filled areas which preserve the stability of the soil under all future structural foundations or paved areas. F. HAUL ROADS: The Contractor shall construct haul roads required to transport materials on site. Alignment of haul roads shall be selected to avoid interference with plant operations. Haul roads shall be removed after completion of embankment construction. The Contractor shall not use existing roads within the treatment plant for haul raods for heavy construction equipment. Heavy construction loads shall be routed over roads to be constructed under this contract except where prior written approval is obtained from the Construction Manager. G. FINISH GRADING: Finished surfaces shall be smooth, compacted and free from irregularities . The degree of finish shall be that normally obtainable with a blade-grader. Finished grade shall be as specified by the contours plus or minus 0 .10 foot except where a local change in elevation is required to match sideialks, curbs , manholes and catch basins, or to ensure Proper drainace. 02200-7 3.01 G When the work is an intermediate stage of completion, the lines and grades shall be as specified plus or minus 0.5 foot to provide adequate drainage. H. CONTROL OF EROSION: The Contractor shall maintain earthwork surfaces true and smooth and protected from erosion. Where erosion occurs, the Contractor shall provide fill or shall excavate as necessary to return earthwork surfaces to the grade and finish specified. I. FILTER FABRIC: Filter fabric shall be installed in the following locations: 1. Below all digester tanks. 2. Below all DAFT tanks. 3. Below the blending/storage tank. 4. STRUCTURE EXCAVATION: Except as otherwise shown or specified, any method of excavation ' within the work limits and easements shown may be used which, in the opinion of the Contractor, is considered best . At those locations, ' where the excavation extends below the static groundwater level, or the natural soils are saturated and of low strength, the Contractor shall take whatever precautions are necessary to maintain the , undisturbed state of the foundation soils at and below the bottom of the excavation. Ground shall not be dug by machinery nearer than 3 inches from any finished subgrade. The last 3 inches shall be removed without i'isturbing the subgrade. The bottom shall not be more than 0. 15 foot above or below the lines and grades specified. If the elevation of structure excavation is not specified, the excavation shall be not more than 0.15 foot above or below the elevation specified for fill material below the structure. Slopes shall vary no more than 0.5 foot from specified grade unless the excavation is in rock where the maximum variation shall be 2 feet . Should the excavation be carried below the lines and grades specified on the drawings or should the bottom of the excavation be disturbed because of the Contract.)r's operations and require overexcavation and backfill, the Contractor shall refill such excavated space to the proper elevation in accordance with the procedure specified for backfill. Unless otherwise specified, excavations shall extend a sufficien'. distance from walls and footings to allow for placing and removal of forms, installation of services, and for inspection, except where concrete is specified to be placed directly against excavated surfaces. B. FOUNDATION TREATMENT: The existing structural fill has been placed as an all-weather working area for the Enlargement IIC contract. The material used for this structural fill is pit run sand and gravel which has been mined from Segale's pit located just north of the City of Renton. The material was a clean pit run sand and gravel mixture free from organic matter. The maximum size gravel did not exceed six inches and no greater than five percent by weight of the material passed the No. 200 sieve. Final excavation for piping and structural foundations will cause much of this material to be moved and some to become contaminated. When contamination takes place, the 02200-10 3.03 B . contaminated material shall be considered to become Type "C• material and its reuse governed accordingly. Whenever any structure excavation is substantially completed to grade, the Contractor shall notify the Construction Manager, who will make an inspection of the foundation. No concrete or masonry shall be placed until the foundation has been inspected by the Construction Manager. The Contractor shall, if directed by the Construction Manager, dig test pits and nake test borings and foundation bearing tests, the cost thereof will be paid as specified in 00710-4 .06. C. STRUCTURE BACKFILL: Unless otherwise specified, placement of all fill materials shall be in accordance with Table A. After completion of construction below the elevation of the final grade, and prior to backfilling, all concrete forms shall be removed and the excavation shall be cleaned of debris. Structure backfill shall not be placed until the subgrade portions of the structure have been inspected by the Construction Manager. No backfill material shall be deposited against concrete structures until the concrete has developed a strength of not less than 2500 pounds per square inch in compression, or until the concrete has been in place for 28 days, whichever occurs first. Backfill material shall be placed in uniform layers and shall be brought up uniformly on all sides of the structure. Compaction of structure backfill shall be accomplished by using power-operated tampers, rollers, or vibratory equipment. Compaction within two feet of walls shall be performed with hand-operated vibratory compactors. NUnless otherwise specified, backfill around and above pipelines within the excavation line of any structure shall be the same as that specified for structures. 3.04 EARTHWORK FOR PIPELINES AND CONDUITS Earthwork for pipelines and conduits is specified in Table A and in the standard details . 0220C-11 3.05 A. 3.05 EARTHWORK FOR EMBANKMENTS A. FOUNDATION PREPARATION: The surface of the foundation shall not contain standing water and shall be free of loose material , foreign objects and rocks greater than 6 inches in maximum dimension. Immediately prior to placement of embankment fill material, the foundation surface shall be thorough_y moistened , scarified to a depth of 6 inches , moisture conditioned again as necessary and recompacted to 95 percent relative compaction. After the preparaticn has been completed, the Contractor shall promptly place and compact the first lift of embankment on the foundation to prevent damage to the surface. If the foundation surface is damaged . the Contractor shall repair the surface to the specified condition. In any areas where materials become soft or yielding, such materials shall be removed, disposed of, and replaced with specified material . The surface of the embankment shall be maintained to permit travel of construction equipment. Ruts in the surface of any layer shall be filled and leveled before compacting. B. EMBANKMENT FILL: Fill shall be placed in accordance with Table A. Rocks, broken concrete, or other solid materials, which are larger than 4 inches in greatest dimension, shall not be placed in embankment areas where piles are to be placed or driven. Fill material having a sand equivalent value less than 10 shall be placed in the lower portions of embankments and shall not be placed within 2 .5 feet of finished grade. When the embankment material consists of large, rocky material, or hard lumps, such as hardpan or cemented gravel which cannot be broken readily, such maYP• i«: shall be well distributed throughout the embankment . Sufficlo,t 3rth or other fine material shall be placed around the larger material as it is deposited so as to fill the interstices and produce a dense, ;ompact embankment. Unless otherwise spec-fied, the embankment shall be raised to form an approximately horizontal plane extending traversely to the final slopes . The embankment shalt. be crowned at all times during construction so that water will drain readily off the embankment . The temporary differential elevation between any two adjoining zones of the embankment due to construction operations shall not exceed 24 inches. 02200-12 3.05 B . If the compacted surface of any layer of material is too smooth to bond properly with the succeeding layer, the surface shall be scarified. If required, the surface shall be sprinkled or otherwise moisture conditioned before the succeeding lift is placed. Any surface crust formed on a layer of fill material that has been dumped and spread shall be broken vp by harrowing and, if required, the full depth of the affectad layer shall be moisture conditioned immediately prior to rolling. C. KEY CONSTRUCTION: Where shown, a key shall be excavated along the length of the toe of fill slopes . The exposed soils along the key and under fill areas shall be disced and/or scarified to a depth of at least 12 inches , moisture conditioned to within 3 percent of optimum moisture content, and compacted to at least 90 percent of maximum dry density. D. EMBANKMENT TOLERANCES: 1. GENERAL: Embankment slopes within 4 feet of shoulder grade shall vary less than 0 . 5 foot from the designated slope. Slopes beyond 4 feet from shoulder grade shall vary less than 1 foot from the designated slope. Measurements for variance shall be made perpendicular to the slope. Slopes which are 6 to 1 or flatter shall vary less than 0.2 foot from the designated slope. 2. ROADWAY AND RAILROAD EMBANKMENT TOLERANCES: The excavated surface shall be less than 0.08 foot above or below the grades specified after deducting for the roadway pavement thin'-.ness or railroad ballast thickness. Vertical alignment tolerances permitted on the roadway or railroad surface shall not exceed plus or minus 0.30 feet from the vertical alignment specified, with the provision that within the tolerance range local surface irregularities shall not exceed 0.15 feet as measured by the gap between the roadway or railroad surface and a 10-foot straightedge placed on any flat graded surface. On vertical curves, the same standards will apply except that an addi- tional gar allowance will be made for the road surface curvature over the 10-foot length of the straightedge. Horizontal alignment tolerances permitted shall not exceed plus or minus 1 foot providing the departure is relatively uniform over over any specific length of the roadway or railroad embankment. 3.06 SUBGRADE FOR PAVEMENT Fill shall be placed in accordance with Table A. Z prepared subgra3e shall be scarified to a depth of at least 12 inches and recompacted to at least 90 percent of the maximum density. 02200-13 3.07 3.07 SITE FILL Unless otherwise specified, site fill shall be Class C2 fill. If the existing slope in an area to be filled is greater than 5: 1, the Contractor shall bench the area prior to filling. 3 .08 FINISH All areas covered by the work, including excavated and filled sections and transition areas, shall be grrded uniformly to the Plevp- ions shcwn. The finished surface shall W reasonably smooth, com; -cted, and free from any irregular s"rface changes. The degree of finish shall be that ordinarily obtainable from a blade-g- ader operation. The finish surface shall he not more than 0. 2 foot above or below the established grade. Ditches shall be finished to drain readily. The surface of areas to be paved on which a base course is to be placed shall not vary more than 0 .05 foot from established grade and cross section.
