R ,IYater Supply for Required Fire Flow - Maple Ave SW and
SW 4th PI
Recently our Department responded to a fully involved house
fire at 304 SW 4th PI . :after making a very shore supply lay
to the fire hydrant on the corner of Maple and SW 4th, 1t was
determined Lhat there was only enough water to supply two 1f"
lines or approximately 300 gallons of water per minute.
In the past, prior to the construction of Sun Pointe Apartments,
the water at this location was more than sufficient. Water
Shop personnel were called to the scene in an effort to evaluate
the problem. Infor,nation relayed from the Water Shop personnel
indicated that a system change had been initiated at the time
of the construction of Sun Pointe Apartments, such that the
supply for this hydrant and adjoining hydrants in the area comes
from a 6" main off of Hardy Ave SW and that all connections
to water systems above Sunset Blvd SW have been terminated,
thus reducing the flow at this hydrant.
The purpose of this memo is to request that the Water Engineering
staff pursue some sort of inter-tie with the new West Hill system
that would boost the flow to these hydrants in the event of
a large water use such as a structure fire requiring a similar
volume of water.
