We have a concern regarding the thrust blocking and its effects on traffic control and safety measures. At night, the excavation should be covered up with steel plates to allow for traffic and to minimize safety hazards. Y s t I However, the concrete thrust blocking will require a minimum cure time before backfill i can be placed and compacted. The site conditions do not seem to allow for the concrete to be poured against undisturbed soil;and the total excavation exeeds the span length of the steel plates. Please have the designer consider this problem and recommend a solution. We have the following suggestions that may be of some help: a Use mega-lug joints or shackle rods instead of thrust blocking. The mega-lugs may need adjusting in the future, but the original restraining bolts can be loosened " and retorqued instead of replaced. a Use half ecology blocks instead of thrust blocking. Use walls of the existing vault to pour concrete against. The plans do not indicate what thrust restraint currently exists at the location of the new 12-inch gate valve. • Adjust traffic control requirements and/or allow safely fencing around excavation. Thank you for assisting with this matter. n Anne nnie L. ~Si-emton, Assoc. Front our evaluation we have determined that installing a 2'X 2'x 6'ecology block ( will be an acceptable alternative as long m the following additions are completed: 1. Backfi8 the remaining excavated area to the edge of undisturbed soil with Control Density Fill (CDF) or extend the ecology block with cast-in-place concrete to undisturbed fill with a minimum bearing surface area of 8.5 square feet. i 2. Cradle the 90°fitting with hi-early cast-in-place concrete in front of the ecology block to prevent point loading on the fitting 3. Fill all voids between the fitting and undisturbed soil with CDF. A second acceptable alternative would be to install the thrust block,as shown on the original plans,to bear against undisturbed soils using a hi-early concrete mix and revising the traffic control plan to accommodate. Either of the two alternatives would be acceptable for restraining the thrust produced during pressure testing at 250 psi. c If you have any questions,or if we can be of further assistance, please call me. /' SEL R.cHf„ Sincerely, COt WAS "r /R/H1G j 22511 F mayo Uit' `TONALsr Dan Ervin,P.E. 4 RH2 EN(ANEERING.K RH2 ENGINEERING,P.S.
