This letter summarizes were perforated using a computer model of the C g y the results of the analyses and the operational conditions used in the hvdraulic model. These engineering services are being provided per our proposal, dated September 13. 1996 and the subsequent authorization letter from you,dated Septemkr 17. 1996. I Background The City intends to modify the pressure zones in the Earlington area to reduce the high pressures that } exist. Mr. Sled provided R112 Engineering with copies of the water system map illustrating three { alternative modifications to the pressure zones in this area. The objective of the analyses is to 11I determine the fire flow capability of the City's water system with each proposed pressure zone modification and compare the results with the fire flow capability of the City's existing system to ensure that the modifications will not reduce the system'%fire flow capability in this area. Hydraulic Analyses Operational Conditions and Criteria A summary of the hydraulic model's operational conditions used in the analyses is as follows: • The City's water system was experiencing maximum day demands. • The 495 Zone West Hill Reservoir was providing supply to the 405 and 270 Zones. A fire flow analysis was performed at six different locations in the Farlinglon area for each of the three proposed pressure zone alternatives to determine the available fire flow at a residual pressure of 20 psi. The following table lists the location of each fire flow simulation, the hydraulic model node number,dynamic pressure during maximum day demand comhhons without a ,� ! fire flow,and the available fire flow. Following the table is a description of each set of analyses. The i ' maximum pressure in the area is 172 psi at node number 120. The result of the analyses also indicates high pressures(greater than 130 psi)at several other locations. Alternative I Analyses This set of analyses is based on the existing water system with a new pressure reducing station ., located along the existing 12-inch water main in 84th Avenue South between South 132nd Street and South 134th Street. The pressure reducing n was modeled with a set point of 360 feet hydraulic elevation. The results of the analyses indi" - ,aat the pressure reducing station improvement would lower the maximum pressures in the area to an acceptable level and also provide fire flow to the area •, 1 at a rate which is similar to the fire flow capability of the existing system. Alternative 2 Analyses jThis set of analyses is based on the existing water system with a small section of water main in ! Stevens Avenue SW converted from the 495 Zone to the 270 Zone,as shown in the enclosed figure 5 for this alternative. Additionally, the fire flow would be substantially reduced in the area of the water in ' conversion. Therefore,this does not appear to be an acceptable alternative. Alternative 3 Analyses This set of analyses is baud on the existing water system with a larger section of water main in the Earlington area convened from the 495 Zone to the 270 Zone,as shown in the enclosed figure for i this alternative. The results of the analyses indicate that the pressures would be reduced in the area f of the water main conversion. However,the fire flows in this area would be substantially reduced to an unacceptable level, as shown in the table. Therefore, this does not appear to be an acceptable alternative, Conclusions and Recommendations Based on the results of the fire flow analyses discussed above and the criteria used to evaluate the three alternatives,the proposed pressure reducing station improvements modeled under Alternative I would be most effective in reducing the high pressures in the Earlington area and providing fire flow that is comparable to the existing system. We recommend a set point of approximately 370 fect ' { hydraulic elevat, n for the smaller control valve in the new pressure reducing station and a set point " of approximately 360 feet hydraulic elevation for the larger control valve.
