Unless otherwise stated, the following occurred in the City of Renton, County of King, State of
Washington.
On 12-02-2025 at approximately 2245 hours I was dispatched to a non-injury, non-blocking two
vehicle collision that occurred at 1901 NE 3rd ST.The reporting party was concerned the other
driver smelled of marijuana.
Upon arrival, I contacted the involved parties and determined that no one was complaining of
injuries and declined to be evaluated by the Renton Regional Fire Authority(RRFA).While on
scene, I collected the involved parties driving documents and their independent recollection of
events leading up to the collision.
The driver of Unit#1 said he was stopped at the red light facing eastbound on N 3rd ST and
Sunset BLVD N, on the west side of the intersection. At some point, he put his vehicle into
reverse but does not recall why or if he even moved the vehicle into reverse.While he was in
reverse, he was struck in the rear by the driver of Unit#2. Unit#1 sustained no damage.
The driver of Unit#2 said he was traveling eastbound on N 3rd ST approaching the red light just
west of Sunset BLVD N. As he came to a stop and positioned himself behind Unit#1, Unit#1 put
their vehicle into reverse and collided with Unit#2. Minor damage was sustained to the front of
Unit#2.
I am unable to determine the proximate cause of the collision. Although Unit#2 rear ended Unit#1,
Unit#1 should not have traveled in reverse while stopped at the intersection. It is unclear why the
driver of Unit#1 shifted gears into reverse. He couldn't recall if he traveled backwards when in the
reverse gear, or if his vehicle stayed stationary.
I did not observe any signs of impairment on the driver of Unit#2.An exchange of information
was provided for all involved parties.
