Every year we produce a family-friendly version of The Nutcracker at the Renton IKEA Arts Center in December. ECB works with highly regarded choreographers, costume artists, photographers, and musicians. Our production of The Nutcracker gives Renton residents ready access to quality dance performances. We produce 4 performances and anticipate 1,500-2,000 attendees. In 2024, 2074 audience members enjoyed The Nutcracker, Last year we included a live professional orchestra at a cost of nearly $40,000 to ECB. This elevated the quality of the production, demonstrated how multiple performing art forms work together, and gave the dancers the valuable experience of dancing to live music. The audience feedback was tremendously positive. Our creative production of The Nutcracker attracts families with children 3-12 years old. For many, this is their first dance performance. Young fans can meet and photograph themselves with their favorite characters, creating priceless memories. We will also organize a free performance for Renton elementary school children. ECB pays for the student transportation for the students to attend. In 2024, approximately 400 Renton elementary school children enjoyed a free performance. The experience was overwhelmingly positive for our dancers as well as the young audience. We also foster young musicians through our collaborations with Newport High School Senior Orchestra. Additionally, we disrupt the traditional notion of what a ballet dancer looks like by casting all body types, ethnicities, and genders. While most of our students are female, we use school presentations to encourage and recruit male dancers who qualify for free classes for one year. Our region is one of the most ethnically/economically diverse regions in the country. ECB represents the diversity of our society and is proud of the growing diversity of our students and staff. Approximately 50% of our students identify with a non-white ethnicity. Additionally, Maximiliano Guerra, our new Artistic Director, is from Argentina and is dedicated to sharing his heritage and fluency in Spanish to connect with Spanish-speaking students. In Argentina, Maximiliano traveled to underserved communities to educate teachers and dancers. He believes that ballet is a universal language that can connect people across cultures and generations. To encourage dance students from low-income households, we provide approximately $10,000 of assistance to economically disadvantaged dance students through waived tuition, fees, and free dance clothing. ECB expands access to the arts by offering reduced/free tickets for students, Veterans, and others.
