Stewart. Absent: Alexis Madison and Colleen Lenahan. Call to Order In President Alexis Madison's absence, Vice President Betsy Prather called the meeting to order at 5:35 PM. Artifact of the Month Information Pete Kalasountas shared with the Board a soccer jersey that his father brought from Greece. Public Comments Information There were no public comments. Board Communications Information Museum Director Liz Stewart shared news about the Museum's involvement in the Renton Multicultural Festival.The Museum operated the Storytelling Tent during the festival, and was hopeful about the potential for interacting with attendees and participants, but most were absorbed with events inside the Pavilion and so the Storytelling Tent fell slate. Liz and Public Engagement Coordinator Kim Owens are considering how to improve next year. Correspondence Information Invitation was received to the final Downtown Renton Visioning Workshop and Liz encouraged Board members to attend. Consent A�enda (Vice President) Action Item A quorum was present. • MOTION: Laura Clawson moved to approve the Consent Agenda; Antoin Johnson seconded. Motion passed, none opposed, none abstaining. Old Business Action Items (1) Committee Reports:There were no committee reports. (2) Under One Roof fundraising event: Renton Community Foundation conducted a Renton- specific online day of giving on September 21. The Custer Fund of the Renton Historical Society received $675 in donations, with volunteer Nancy Fairman as the largest single donor. Trustees Lynne King and Liz Stewart also gave. Lynne King has a walk-through scheduled with the caterer. Liz shared the list of duties during the event, and Renton Youth Council had confirmed as servers; Hazen High DECA had not yet confirmed. Ticket sales were slow, and trustees were encouraged to sell tickets and help promote the event on social media. Discussion Action Items (1) Budget 2018:Treasurer Laura Clawson and Director Liz Stewart will begin working on the budget for 2018 as soon as the fundraiser is complete, with the goal of presenting a final budget at the November meeting with a vote at the December Board meeting/ Holiday Potluck. Mission Moment Liz shared the autumn 2017 calendar of events and reported that Kim Owens is doing an excellent job at programming the exhibits with interesting and thought-provoking speakers and performers. Tours included a group of McKnight Middle School students with their Nishiwaki exchange partners. Exhibition Hall and Education Buildin with � g _ F _ �� ' "` '��' classrooms, collections storage, and offices. -=�� New Education Building at Northwest Railway Museum 1 New City web site: The City of Renton is working on rolling out a new web site with a different CMS system sometime late this year and Public Engagement Coordinator Kim Owens and Curator Sarah Samson are re-working all the Museum's pages on the new City web site.They have done a heroic job of experimenting and working through all the glitches with minimal training, in a project that has taken days of their time. Exhibits History of Renton in 75 Objects exhibit:A History of Renton in 75 Objects remains on exhibit until January 2018. Public Engagement Coordinator Kim Owens has planned several fall programs focusing on artifacts and what we can learn from them, to enhance the exhibit's theme of"our favorite objects." Black& White will feature men's and women's fashions from our collection that explore how color—or the absence of color—affected our ancestors' fashion choices and how we think about the past. A team of UW Museology students launched the research for this exhibit, and Curator Sarah Samson has led staff in completing the exhibit. Sarah is also working with local seamstresses Cathy Lim and Bridget Shew on a contemporary component to the exhibition. , � Renton in WWI: Our third exhibit for 2018 will � � � T�:=�.�. �� _ '� open in June and close on Veterans Day, the end - � �; � - � - ' of the commemoration of American involvement ��. -`�-, • :��` _-� 'i `� i' in the War to End All Wars. (#1985.091.2139) Pro�rams, Outreach, and Education Curriculum development: The Renton School District has budgeted $1200 to implement the new Coast Salish curriculum beginning in November. Kim is making last edits, in consultation with Native educators, and we'll begin printing the final version in �ENTc�N HISTaRICAL October. Programs include partnership events with the City of Renton (Storytelling Tent at Multicultural Festival) and KCLS ("Under Our Skin"), as well as programs designed to enhance the current exhibit. Bookmarks and Landmarks 2018:The Museum has committed to participating in South King County Cultural Coalition's Bookmarks and Landmarks program for 2018. Bookmarks and Landmarks pairs historic sites with books for adults or kids that will enhance understanding of the site. Liz and Kim will be working with SoCoCulture and KCLS this fall to select a book and a site. Volunteers Volunteer Program: In August 16 volunteers contributed 82 hours of service, on such activities as Saturday greeting, Board service, and collections projects. Kim interviewed a potential leader for the oral history team, who will be available to volunteer after mid-October. Museum Office Aide Nezy Tewolde continues to provide excellent support for the volunteer program in scheduling and record-keeping. RHSMinutes_09262017_approved Page 6 of 6
