Statements have been paraphrased and summarized. On 01-10-2026 1 was working as a police officer in a fully marked, department issued uniform, patrolling in a marked police vehicle for the city of Renton.At approximately 2051 hours I was dispatched to a recent hit and run report at the intersection of Factory Ave N/N 4th St, City of Renton, County of King, State of Washington. I gathered from the call notes, 3 AGO... 2 MVA H&R... OTHER VEH WHI BMW SEDAN GOA SB ON FACTORY PL N Dispatch further advised that the suspect vehicle drove the wrong way down a one-way road. The suspect vehicle's front plate (AHP2220/WA)was left at the scene. I conducted a WACIC/NCIC records check of the license plate, and it returned to a white 2009 BMW 328i (VIN#WBAPK535X9A514309).The listed registered owner of the vehicle was Viet H. Nguyen (DOB 08-06-1976). 1 arrived on scene and located a gray 2025 Hyundai Elantra (license plate#CRU2691/WA)just west of the intersection with obvious rear driver's side damage. The rear driver's side wheel had white paint residue on the rim, and the rear driver's side fender had been bent off the frame with white paint residue left behind as well. I contacted the driver of the Elantra who I positively identified as Steven D.Wheeler(DOB 09-17-1984)via WADL. Steven was not injured from the collision that occurred. Steven advised the following: Steven drove westbound on N 4th St through the intersection of N 4th St/Factory Ave N in the number one lane. Steven had a solid green light to continue westbound through the intersection. As Steven drove through the intersection, he observed a white BMW sedan drove northbound into the intersection of Factory Ave N/N 4th St in the number two lane. Unfortunately, the BMW collided with the rear driver's side of Steven's vehicle.Afterwards, the BMW did not stop to exchange information with Steven.The driver of the BMW fled the scene southbound on Factory Pl N and he lost sight of the vehicle shortly. Steven said that the vehicle was heavily tinted and could not describe the driver of the BMW. Steven said that the front plate was left lodged between the rear driver's side fender and the rear driver's side wheel. I collected the license plate and stowed it in the back of my patrol vehicle. Steven advised that if a suspect were identified he wanted to press charges. The proximate cause for the collision is that the driver of the BMW failed to obey the red light, and entered the intersection while Steven had the right of way. If a suspect is positively identified, I have probable cause to believe that they have committed the crime of Hit and Run Attended (RCW 46.52.020.3) by being involved in a collision and failing to immediately stop to provide their name, address, insurance company, insurance policy number, and vehicle license number. I took photos of Steven's vehicle and uploaded them to evidence.com. I provided Steven a copy of the case number to reference this incident. I conducted a local records check of the BMW and of Viet. I found that Viet was listed as a registered owner for a collision reported by the Renton Police Department. The collision was documented under case number 25-8917. As I reviewed the case report I found that Bennett H. N. Nguyen (DOB 04-26-2009) drove a different vehicle that was registered to Viet. I contacted Bennett by phone and asked if he had recently drove a white BMW. Bennett replied that he was, and that he was still in Renton looking for his missing front plate. I advised Bennett I would meet with him at Target located at 1215 N Landing Way to return his missing license plate. Officer: Mello,Joseph #R13020 Reviewed By: Date/Time: 01 /1 1 /2026 10:41 Collision 2026-00000283 Paqe 4 OF 6 Case Number 2026-00000283 Officer Narrative-Continued Based off the totality of the circumstances, I have reasonable suspicion to believe that Bennett was involved in a motor vehicle collision with Steven and fled the scene. I re-contacted Steven by phone, and he advised that he would no longer press charges if he received the other involved party's insurance and contact information. As I waited for Bennett at the north end of the Target parking lot, a white BMW 328i bearing rear License plate#AHP2220/WA arrived.The front plate was missing to the vehicle, and there was obvious front-end damage to the vehicle.The front end of the vehicle had the thin black grill broken off, had very noticeable gray paint scratch marks, and a large chunk of metal missing from the frame. I contacted the driver of the vehicle who I positively identified as Bennett via WADOL photo. Later, Bennett admitted that he was involved in the collision and fled the scene. Bennett was able to provide me with his name, address, phone number, and valid insurance. I asked Bennett why he did not stop after the collision occurred. Bennett replied that he would have gotten in trouble with his parents if they found out he was involved in another collision. I returned the license plate I recovered from the scene of the collision back to Bennett. I gave Bennett a copy of the case number and Steven's exchange of information. I took photos of Bennett's vehicle and uploaded it to evidence.com. I re-contacted Steven by phone and provided him with Bennett's name, contact information, vehicle information, and insurance. I issued Bennett a Sector citation under cite#6A0096828 for Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device (46.61.050). 1 had the citation mailed to Bennett's DOL address. I request this case be closed due to the victim no longer wanting to pursue charges.
