Within the city limits of Renton/King/Wa I responded to a car v pedestrian injury crash at the
intersection of S 43rd St at Talbot Rd S.
I located the Ped on the southwest corner of the intersection seated and being tended to by a
witness. His face/forehead was swollen on the right side and bleeding. He had abrasions on both
palms and his right knee was bleeding with his jeans torn open.
The Ped did not provide details reference the crash and was verbally ID'd. He was able to contact his
mother who arrived on scene and ID'd him as well.
The witness pointed to the van and driver and said when the Ped was crossing north to south on the
west side/marked crosswalk the van was making a right turn and struck the bed knocking him down.
Renton Fire arrived and was tending to the Ped. His mother would later take him to VMC-ED for
further checks and additional treatment.
I contacted the driver of unit 1 ID'd by his matching picture WADL. He told me he was in the right turn
lane preparing to make a right turn when he struck the Ped. He told me he didnt see the Ped at the
time of contact. Unit 1 said he believed he was going about walking speed. He did not complain of
injury and there was nothing remarkable or damage to his vehicle.
This intersection has electronic traffic control devices in all directions. The traffic control for unit 1 is
both a signal and an additional prohibited right turn electrionic control device. The prohibited right
turn is only lit through a portion of the light cycles and does allow for a right turn on red. Regardless,
a driver is required to yield the right of way to a pedestrian who was utilizing a marked crosswalk at
the time of the collision. A driver may not make a right turn on red until it is clear of any hazard. A
driver may not proceed on a green light while a pedestrian in crossing in an unmarked or marked
crosswalk.
Once the roadway was clear I met with Ped mother in the lobby of the ED. I provided her a copy of
the collision information exchange. I provided intake medical staff with the basic mechanics of the
collision which was consisted with a ped walking from the north to the south and struck by a vehicle
making a right turn.
I cited unit 1 via complaint reference RCW 46.61.235-Crosswalks FTYROW to Ped in marked
crosswalk car v ped injury collision.
