Crime in Renton dropped significantly in 2025. Property crimes led the way, with car thefts down 42% and car prowls down 38%. Assaults fell 17%, and firearms assaults dropped 24%. While this reflects a nationwide trend, our officers and detectives remain tenacious; they never give up on our community. We also have exciting new tools to fight crime, following the City Council’s approval of a technology package. A new real-time tech center will use advanced tools to solve and respond to crimes, including a Drone as First Responder Program that provides aerial intelligence before officers even arrive on scene. Upgraded body cameras will offer instant translation to better serve non-English-speaking residents, and a DeDrone Rapid Response Trailer will detect and track unauthorized drones to safeguard public events. Together, these tools position Renton PD as a leader in public safety innovation and reinforce our commitment to transparency and community trust. Staffing remains a challenge, but we’re grateful the City Council authorized nine new positions for 2026, eight officers and one sergeant. We’ll be re-energizing our recruitment efforts to find the best candidates. I believe Renton PD is among the finest departments in the region, and I look forward to welcoming our new members. — Chief Jon Schuldt 137 Sworn Police Officers 39 Professional Staff 24 Volunteers 1,063 Volunteer Hours OUR MISSION STATEMENT Working together to provide professional and unbiased law enforcement services to our community. Valley SWAT responds to extraordinary law enforcement situations, such as active threats, high-risk warrant service, barricaded subjects, hostage situations, and sniper situations. Each agency staffs, equips, trains, and responds to provide exceptional service to the communities. Patrol Operations Patrol officers are the uniformed police who show up when you call 911, day or night, rain or shine. We have 64 officers covering the North and South sides of the city. For patrol officers, no two days are the same. Officers might handle anything from a fender bender to a neighborhood dispute to a late-night disturbance. They get a chance to interact with a diverse group of people and tackle whatever challenges are thrown their way, from urgent calls to routine tasks. Patrol Services Patrol Services handles the things that keep our streets safe and our community events running smoothly. Our traffic unit monitors dangerous behaviors such as impaired and distracted driving, and street racing. They investigate collisions and manage cameras at high-risk intersections and school zones to protect drivers, cyclists, and kids walking to school. Parking, Animal Control, and the School Resource Officer program are also housed in this division. Patrol Services also makes sure community favorites like Renton River Days, go off without a hitch. Whether you’re commuting to work or celebrating with your neighbors, we’re working to keep you safe. 6 Special Operations The Special Operations Division includes two Directed Enforcement Teams (DET) and one Special Enforcement Team (SET), proactively addressing ongoing issues and crimes in the city. SET also includes Vice and Narcotics investigations. The Violent Crime Unit (VCU) focuses on the most violent offenders and armed suspects. VCU, DET, and SET can conduct lengthy investigations, many times traveling outside the City of Renton. Drones The Renton Police Department is a regional leader in using drones to investigate crimes and serious collisions. The department’s 30 pilots conducted 1,245 flights and had over 300 flight hours in 2024, including training flights. In 2025, the Renton City Council approved a new technology package for the police department, which will include the Drone as First Responder program. This program will add 9 new drones across 4 sites. Police drones provide real-time aerial views that help officers respond faster, make safer decisions, and manage emergencies more effectively. They support search and rescue, improve situational awareness, reduce risks to officers, and enhance overall public safety. 7 Staff Services The Staff Services Division is the police department’s information gateway, providing officers and the public with information, processing reports, and releasing public records. The Property and Evidence team manages the intake, storage, and disposal of property and evidence collected by officers. Administrative Services The Administrative Services Division includes officer training and recruitment, equipment, community programs, media relations, social media, and the volunteer program. In 2025, RPD hired five entry-level officers and one lateral officer. Each officer receives 1,512 hours of training before working solo. The department has 24 volunteers who contributed 1,063 hours of service to the department in 2025. Our Department Investigations The Renton Police Department’s Investigations unit includes detectives specializing in persons and property crimes. Persons crimes include the most serious, including homicide, robbery, sexual assault, felony assault, felony domestic violence, and crimes against children. Property crimes include theft, burglary, car theft, shoplifting, and economic crimes. The unit also has a Domestic Violence Advocate and is supported by a crime analyst. 8 K-9 Officer, Wally K-9 Officer, Jager K-9 Officer, Xander K-9 Officer, Zoey (Retired) K-9 Wally: In 2025, the department added a new therapy dog, Wally. Wally is a lovable English Lab whose job is to help people in stressful situations, including officers and community members. Wally loves his job and has made an incredible difference, so much so that we are looking to add another therapy dog in 2026. K9 Jager is our new K9 Generalist. He’s a nearly 2-year-old German Shepard from Holland and follows commands in Dutch. He helps search for suspects and tracks evidence. His favorite activity is playing ball in the backyard with his humans. K9 Xander continues to excel as a K9 Generalist. Xander is a 5½-year-old German Shepherd trained in building and area searches, suspect tracking, and evidence searches. He works with patrol to find suspects who’ve fled a crime scene. At home, Xander loves to work on his hockey skills with his human brother. K9 Zoey retired this year after more than nine years of loyal service as a narcotics detection K9. Zoey was trained to sniff out heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine. She has found over $8 million worth of narcotics. Thank you, Zoey, and happy retirement! 9 Shred-A-Thon, Rx Take Back & Food Drive RPD collected and disposed of 9 tons of sensitive documents and 246 pounds of unwanted prescriptions. We also collected over $617 and 925 pounds of food to benefit the Salvation Army Food Bank. RPD hosts dozens of events and actively explores new ways to engage with the community each year. We believe partnering with our residents and business community makes us all safer. Community Engagement National Night Out Each year, we participate in National Night Out and attend neighborhood gatherings. We bring some police cars and let the kids (and adults!) check them out. It’s an opportunity to discuss crime-prevention strategies with entire neighborhoods. Community Academy/ Renton Youth Academy The Community Police Academy is a seven- week program that guides community members through all aspects of the Renton Police Department. Participants learn about police operations, investigations, and the department’s behind-the-scenes. The Renton Youth Academy is a four-day, fun-filled learning program for 36 middle school students. More than a dozen law enforcement and public safety agencies lead participants through mock crime scenes, combat challenges, fingerprinting, drone operations, K-9s, and emergency simulations. 10 Shop with a Cop Seventeen 3rd-5th-grade students are carefully chosen to be paired with Renton police officers for a festive holiday shopping spree. The day includes breakfasts, crafts, shopping, and gift wrapping to ensure everyone has a gift to open over the holidays. The young people receive gift cards to shop for everyone in their family, including a gift for themselves. The families also receive gift cards for grocery stores to help with holiday meal expenses. Battle of the Badges Public safety agencies from around the region gather in Renton to celebrate the holidays by decorating their vehicles, floats, and sometimes boats! In 2025, more than 4,000 community members attended the celebration as 24 agencies battled for the best display. Neighborhood/ Business Watch These programs encourage collaboration among police, neighborhoods, and businesses to reduce crime. The Crime Prevention team offers security surveys and education to help the community. 11 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR TBD LIFESAVING AWARD Ediger, Tyler July 11, 2025 Myers, Jeff July 11, 2025 Peterson, Kevin Aug 31, 2025 Cumming, Timothy Aug30, 2025 Tamaivena, Siti Aug 30, 2025 Thielman, Jacob Oct 3, 2025 Nguyen, Timoth Oct 3, 2025 MERITORIOUS SERVICE Jarratt, Tracie Dec 2, 2025 LETTER OF COMMENDATION Phillips, Rylee June 2, 2025 YEARS OF SERVICE AWARD 30 years Adam, David Bunko, Georgia Edwards, Chris Gould, James Haddrell, Liz Paget, Christine Schuldt, Jon 20 years Braun, Meghan Hermann, Jennifer 10 years Cumming, Timothy Dalan, Mark Davis, Charles Karney, Morgan McGruder, Robert Nugent, Matthew Slinkman III, Robert Thielman, Jacob VanderHoek, Jesse Woodward, Scott 2025 Honors 12 13 rentonwa.gov/police File a police report: rentonwa.gov/policereport Police non-emergency number: 425-430-7500 Call 911 in an emergency
