EG86763 CASE# 26-2028 DATE OF COLLI r�510NN + 03/14/26 13:10 L1 NARRATIVE 26-2028 On 03/14/2026 at approximately 1314 hours, I was dispatched to a blocking two-vehicle collision at the intersection at Benson Drive South and Benson Road South, within the City Limits of Renton, County of King, State of Washington. Upon arrival, I contacted the involved parties and initially determined that there were no complaints of injury. However, after about 15 minutes of being on scene, the driver of Unit#2 later complained of head and neck pain. The Renton Regional Fire Authority (RRFA) was requested. RRFA responded, treated, and released all involved parties at the scene. While on scene, I collected the involved parties driving documents and their independent recollection of events leading up to the collision. The driver of Unit#1 said he was the sole occupant of his vehicle and was traveling northbound in about the 17300 block of Benson Drive South -approaching the controlled intersection of Benson Rd S. The driver of Unit#1 stated he was traveling directly behind Unit#2 and saw as Unit#2 had come to a stop for the traffic signal at the upcoming intersection. The driver of Unit#1 stated that he simply was unable to stop in time and subsequently collided with the rear of Unit#2 causing moderate damage to the front of Unit#1. The driver of Unit#1 told me, "it's my fault". The driver of Unit#2 said she was the sole occupant of her vehicle and was also traveling northbound in about the 17300 block of Benson Drive South -and had reached the intersection of Benson Rd S. The driver Unit#2 stated she came to a stop the traffic signal when Unit#1 collided with the rear of Unit#2 causing moderate damage to the rear of Unit#2. The driver of Unit#1 (Lee) was not paying attention to traffic in front of him. Lee violated Renton Municipal Code (RMC) 10-12-25 -Inattentive Driving which is defined as any person to drive a motor vehicle on any public highway, street, alley, or road in an inattentive manner in the City of Renton. "Inattentive manner" in this section means a lack of: 1) attentiveness required to safely operate the vehicle under the prevailing conditions, including, but not limited to, the nature and condition of the roadway, the weather conditions, the presence of pedestrians, the presence of other traffic, or by the driver focusing or directing the driver's attention to something other than driving the motor vehicle; or 2) attentiveness that would permit the driver of a motor vehicle to observe anything resting on, or traveling on, or entering the roadway in time to take appropriate action as circumstances require. (Ord. 4462, 7-25-94, eff. retroactive to 7-1-94; Ord. 5635, 11-14-11). Based on the above statements, I determined that the Driver of Unit#1 (Lee) is the proximate cause for the collision due to inattention causing a collision. Lee should have been paying closer attention to the movement of traffic in front of him. I cited Lee via mail for Inattention. I also issued a correction notice to the driver of Unit#2 (Yunis) in- person for expired registration which a DOL records check confirmed that Unit#2's registration had expired back on 01/13/2024. Yunis was given 30 days to correct the expired registration for her vehicle. Both involved vehicles were able to be driven away without further incident.
