In 2025, City Council passed the public safety sales tax authorized under House Bill 2015 (City of Renton
Ordinance 6167). The City of Renton started to collect the tax in January 2026. The Police
Department has proposed one (1) Sergeant Position and four (4) Officer Positions during presentations
to council and city leadership in 2025. Working together with our finance department the following
calculations were made:
The first-year cost for the one (1) Sergeant Position will be $353,000.00. The first-year costs for
four (4) Officer Positions $1,259,200.00 ($314,800 per officer). The total cost of the five (5)
Police FTE’s is $1,612,200.00.
The public safety sales tax authorized under HB 2015 (Ordinance 6167) will continue to fund these five
(5) positions and will not require future biennium budget adjustments.
City Council and City Leadership’s decision to pass Ordinance 6167 in October of 2025, authorizing the
collection of the public safety sales tax authorized under House Bill 2015 reflects the city’s
strong commitment to maintaining the safety, well-being, and quality of life in our
community. This investment will allow the PD to strengthen essential services, embrace new
technology capabilities, and enhance our ability to response effectively to the evolving needs of our
community.
Approve the five (5) Full-Time positions in the next 2026 budget adjustment.
