Arts-Based Intergenerational Identity Book Club
Brief project description
The proposed project is an arts-based Intergenerational Identity Book Club, geared towards children ages 3-10 and their caregivers,
to be hosted at the Renton Public Library. I have offered this book club three times previously, each time receiving positive feedback.
The goal of this book club is to introduce children and their grown-ups to a different social identity each week (e.g. race, language,
gender, class, etc). During sessions we will read a book together, spend most of our time on art activity relating to the topic of the
session, and have time to share our creations and learn from one another. Programming would be free, and snacks will be provided.
I am proposing to run 10 sessions. Two focusing on different aspects of race (one week we do a zine activity breaking down different
aspects of race, another we focus specifically on skin color), one focusing on language, one focusing on gender, one focusing on
class, and one focusing on culture. These six sessions will use art activities and session plans that are already created, with some
small adjustments. Based on conversations we have been having with caregivers in the specific socio-political moment we are in, I
am proposing to develop and lead four additional sessions that caregivers have expressed wanting support in exploring with children:
citizenship, immigration-background more broadly, disability, and faith. For each of these additional sessions I would develop art
activities to help us explore the topic together, identify books that can help lead into these activities, and develop the curricular
materials to guide the session. Example past art activities have included zines, collage, weaving, painting, and decorating
shirts/bandanas.

The Renton Public Arts Program is committed to broadening the scope of arts programming and connecting with underserved
populations in the City of Renton and the broader community. Please detail what steps you plan to take to connect with
underserved populations in the City.
*
The Intergenerational Identity Book Club intentionally brings together adults and children to learn about social identities together. While the
project will broadly target children and their caregivers as participants, I am proposing to run programming at the public library with the hope
that it will be accessible to families who may not otherwise be able to afford similar programming. Of course, this does not assure that my
project will specifically focus on traditionally marginalized communities. I plan to share event information with local elementary schools, as well
as groups such as the Family First Community Center to help in recruiting participants. I am also open to other suggestions of folx to connect
with!

Artist Bio
Hania Mariën is a multidisciplinary artist, educator and researcher inspired by the natural world,
and what it can teach us about interdependence, community and solidarity. She calls the land
and water of the Pacific Northwest home, and her work often highlights the mountains and
coasts I grew up on, and the critters who live there. Her whimsical and colorful style is inspired
by the color-rich land and waterscapes I explore, and a strong belief that play and imagination
are essential tools to work towards liberation.
As part of her work, she runs Imagining More Just Futures (IMJF), a social justice education
project for children and their grown-ups. Through IMJF, she offers a variety of arts-based
programming helping children and accompanying adults explore identity, power and justice.
Hania received her PhD in Education and EdM in Arts in Education from the Harvard Graduate
School of Education. Her research has focused on how adults can support children in engaging
with power and how it shapes our lives and societies. She has worked in arts-based
out-of-school-time settings since 2013, and loves learning with children and adults through play
and stories.
Organization Overview
Imagining More Just Futures (IMJF), is a social justice education project for children and their
grown-ups. We offer programming including workshops, book clubs, Critical Participatory Action
Research projects, and training for educators. For five years, we have run this programming out
in Massachusetts while we were completing our doctoral programs, and during this time we
were funded by a variety of small grants that enabled us to pursue this work. Now that I am
back in Washington, I am looking forward to being able to offer similar programming in the
greater Seattle area.
All of our programming is based on years of research offering insights into the needs of children
and families when engaging in topics related to identity, power and justice (e.g. scaffolding,
playfulness, emotionally safe environment). From this research, we know that art and play are
two of the most important tools we can use to support learning around these topics. The
arts-based book club proposed in this grant application is one outcome of this research that
directly applies strategies gleaned from our research to support kids’ and families’ engagement
and learning.
Project Relevance
Our social identities - identities that connect us to groups of people like race, gender, ethnicity,
culture, etc - are all intertwined. While they are socially constructed ideas, and aren't "real" in a
biological sense, they have real impacts on all of our lives. Despite their relevance and impact,
programming allowing people to learn about social identities often isn't offered until
adolescence, if not young adulthood. As a result, children lack tools to understand their own
experiences, and those of others around them. Children start developing awareness about
social identities like race and gender as early as age 3, and by age 4, children may start to
discriminate based on social identity markers. Simultaneously, adults often don’t have the
knowledge or resources about how to approach conversations about these important identity
related topics with children.
My doctoral research focused on how adults can support children in learning about social
identity, justice and power, and this book club allows me to share some of what I have learned
with children, caregivers and families in my surrounding communities. Because similar
programming is usually only offered starting in adolescence, this program fills a gap in
programming allowing Renton children and families to explore their own cultural backgrounds.
Examples of Previous Work
For the past five years I have run a variety of program offerings including identity book clubs,
and workshops about justice, power, identity. I have also started my own art business, and run
participatory art projects with youth. This proposal draws on this wealth of experience.
The book club this proposal is based on was developed in response to research myself, and a
co-research conducted to understand how adults can support children in understanding identity,
justice and power. It applies strategies that emerge from this research, and also from my own
practice as an educator for the last decade. The art activities in this adapted book club will
include (but not be limited to) printmaking and collage, art forms that I use in my own art
practice. If you are interested, you can learn more about the first year of the book club here. I
Though it would be my first time running this book club in Washington, based on my past
experience with the general programming structure I am confident in my ability to execute this
proposal. I have run similar programming at libraries before, including, but not limited to:
arts-based identity workshops focusing on just one identity; zine making workshops making with
topics of justice and resistance; an intergenerational storytelling and art-making event using a
picture book and collages to learn about queer history and resistance; workshops using the
picture book Separate is Never Equal by Duncan Tonatiuh as a starting point an activity to help
us imagine new worlds and represent them through drawing, collage, and other art mediums;
and workshops using a tool called The Power Rainbow to scaffold understandings of structural
power for middle school students completing a community action projects. Outside of IMJF, I
also recently developed and ran workshops using visual art and poetry to help children learn
about how to navigate extreme heat. I have extensive experience collaborating with diverse
community partners to make events happen, as well as experience recruiting caregivers and
adults for similar programming.
Audience
The audience for this project is Renton area children and their grown-ups. While programming
will be suggested for children ages 3-10, children outside of that age range are welcome to
attend. In past iterations we have found that children in the 3-10 age range attend with siblings
who are older or younger, along with caregivers, and that older children sometimes attend
alone.
I will work with the libraries to determine what times they believe will work best for children &
caregivers. In the past this has ranged from mid-day for younger audiences, to directly after
school, to just before dinner on weekdays, to weekends.
I anticipate serving between 3-12 families/groups per session.
Funding sources
This grant would be the sole funding for this project. If I do not receive the requested amount of
funding, I would need to scale back on the number of sessions I am able to offer in accordance
with the amount allotted.
Timeline
The exact timeline will be determined with the library. I am open to multiple per week, or per
month, starting in January.
