Officer Narrative
Narrative
On 05/31/2026, 1 was working uniformed patrol in a marked police car as 3R23.At approximately
0058 hours, I rolled up to a collision that occurred at Sunset Blvd NE at the 1405NB on-ramp.
This location is also addressed to be about the 400 block of Sunset Blvd NE, which is located
within the city limits of Renton, County of King,Washington.
I was able to identify all involved vehicles, drivers, and associated passengers, as listed above.
Each vehicle will be referred to as Unit 1 and Unit 2, as also described above.
As I was driving northbound on Sunset Blvd NE, I located both Unit 1 and Unit 2 stopped in the
middle of the intersection. I noticed that Unit 1 was preparing to head northbound onto the 1405
on-ramp. I also saw that Unit 2 was heading southbound on Sunset Blvd NE.All occupants
involved were outside of their vehicles,talking to each other. I called an additional unit to assist
me,which later arrived and spoke to Unit 1.
I was able to speak to the driver of Unit 2. He was also accompanied by his front passenger in his
vehicle, as listed above. Unit 2's driver mentioned the following:
Unit 2 stated he was heading southwestbound on Sunset Blvd NE approaching the 1405 NB
on-ramp. He described Unit 1 coming from the opposite direction, passing through the
intersection to enter the 1405 NB, crossing Unit 2's driving path.
Unit 2 stated he attempted to slow down, as he saw Unit 1 enter the intersection, but was
unable. This resulted in the front end of Unit 2 colliding with the front passenger side of Unit 1.
Unit 2 and his passenger stated that they were wearing their seatbelt.
The driver of Unit 2 initially requested a fire department evaluation, mentioning he was in shock
but did not report any specific pain. Once the fire department arrived, he declined the
evaluation, stating he was fine.
The front passenger of Unit 2 suffered no injuries.
I took a look around Unit 2 and saw that no airbags had deployed. I also saw that the front
plastic grill in the middle was slightly broken.The damage was very minor. I did not notice any

other obvious damage to the vehicle.
I then met with Officer J. Kauppila, who spoke with Unit 1. He was the sole occupant of his
vehicle and needed the assistance of the Somali Language Line.The following information was
relayed to me:
Unit 1 explained that he was traveling northeastbound on Sunset Blvd NE approaching the
northbound 1405 NB on-ramp. Unit 1 continued to cross past the southwestbound lanes of
travel to continue onto the on-ramp. Unit 2 was headed southwestbound on Sunset Blvd NE at
the same time as Unit 1 was attempting to cross the southwestbound lanes of Sunset Blvd NE to
continue on the on-ramp.This resulted in the front of Unit 2 colliding with the front passenger
side of Unit 1.
Unit 1 stated he believed that Unit 2 was speeding and also possibly had been drinking. It should
be noted that I did not find any indicators that the driver of Unit 2 was impaired.
Unit 1 stated that he was wearing his seatbelt. Unit 1 also stated he was not injured.
I took a look around Unit 1 and saw that no airbags had deployed. I also saw that the front
passenger side bumper sustained a minor scuff. I did not locate any other obvious damage to
the vehicle.
Unit 1 at this time was also unable to provide the police with insurance information.
It should be noted that traffic headed northeastbound on Sunset Blvd NE onto the 1405 NB
on-ramp had a yield sign just prior to crossing into the opposite lanes of traffic on Sunset Blvd
NE.
Both parties were provided with Renton PD business cards for their records.
Unit 1 and Unit 2 left the scene under their own power as both vehicles were operable.
Associated photos were uploaded to Evidence.com to be added to the case file.
Based on the circumstances described above, it appears that Unit 1 is the proximate cause of
