RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES—September 5,2017
Members Present:
Mitch Shepherd, Mary Clymer, Neil Sheesley, Bill Huls, Kim Patterson, Samantha Goetz-Granquist,
Jerri Everett, Su Gow, Dave Samek, and Evelyn Reingold
Members Excused: Ben Andrews, Adrienne La Faye and Marsha Rollinger
Staff Present: Jessie Kotarski, RMAC Administrative Assistant
Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC-Chair, Mitch Shepherd at 6:08 pm.
Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the August 14, 2017 were read and accepted MSC(Bill/Mary)
Correspondence and Announcements:
Announcement: A nice article about Ben Andrews is in the latest Renton Reporter. Good job Ben!
Correspondence and event folders were circulated for individual review.
Bud�et: The 2018 Budget Process Review started with the City of Renton budget meeting on
September 1, 2017. It is anticipated that the RMAC 2017 allocation will be the same. The allocations
have been sent for review and the final decision will be made by Council in November.
New Business:
Galvanizing Art Projects, New:
*Cortona Building Butterflies— Pictures of various sized and colored butterflies were shown for a
general idea of the mural concept for the side of the building. The RMAC approves the design and the
intent of the building owner to submit a small grant proposal for the installation. (Mary/Evelyn) MSC
* Dragonfly— Mary presented a proposal for a metal dragonfly sculpture garden from Marsha. The
sculpture garden would be on the strip in front of Cheers at South 2nd and Williams and will cost
approximately$500. Additional details will be forthcoming.
*Morse Code Blocks— Mary and Marsha proposed a graphic mural for the side of the Burger Town
building at 601 South 3rd. Square colored blocks will spell "color" in Morse Code. The material and
labor are estimated at$900. It was also proposed that the project installation be documented for an
additional $300. The project concept was accepted with the contingency of an email approval from a
quorum of the RMAC for final approval.
*Punjab, India—Women's Festival-A letter of inquiry was received from the planners of this annual
festival which has been held in Kent, WA. Over 1000 people attend this event and the planners want
to consider Renton and would like suggestions as to venues. The Piazza and the Big 5 space were
suggested. Jessie will coordinate a weekend date in July 2018 with all concerned parties.
Old Business:
* National Park(ing) Day/Pop-Up Planning— Update: The RMAC will share space the King County
Library and Urban Sprout in front of the Cortona Building on Friday, September 15—Sunday,
September 17, 2017. The space will have seating, bookshelves and books, as well as drawing
materials. Mitch will coordinate the set up with KCL and Urban Sprouts. RMAC members are urged
to take a shift to represent and answer questions about art in Renton. The survey cards will be
handed out and Mary will design a deposit box for visitors to leave the postcard survey.
* Multi-Culture Weekend Celebration—Sam has been on the Planning Committee for the event that
will be held on September 23-24, 2017 at the Carco. The RMAC will have a table with an art project
and the survey postcards will also be distributed. RMAC members are urged to take a shift to
represent and answer questions about art in Renton during this event.
