The Renton Public Arts Program is committed to broadening the scope of arts programming and connecting with underserved
populations in the City of Renton and the broader community. Please detail what steps you plan to take to connect with
underserved populations in the City.
*
Through Global Heat’s workshops and concerts, including work in the Central District, Rainier Valley, White Center of Seattle, and tours to Reno
Nevada, California, and Shanghai, China, we have witnessed the power of music to bring dierent cultures together and transform individual
lives. Global Artists Collective has produced cross-cultural music/dance concerts, participatory workshops, and panel discussions for more
than 10 years. We have facilitated collaboration among master-level performing artists in traditional cultural drum & dance of Africa; Capoeira
of Brazil; Hip Hop break dance; and Kung Fu. For the proposed project, we will choose venues and develop a promotional plan that facilitates
connections with underserved populations in the City.
CHOICE OF VENUES
Venue selection should help in making the workshops and concerts accessible to the public including underserved populations in the Renton.
Our connections with the community include Black and Latinix people, and the music community in the Seattle-Tacoma and Eastside Metro
Area. Assuming ICE activities may escalate in the Seattle area, we will discuss with the coordinator for RMAC how to make immigrants and
refugees interested in our events feel safe about attending. This is an issue we have not faced previously, but plan to track and address
appropriately.
PROMOTIONS PLAN AND REACH
From our experience producing arts events, the promotional plan for the proposed project includes the following:
• Target audience is youth and all ages of adults for the workshops and all ages for the concert, especially people interested in African
American and World Music emphasizing Soul/R&B, Funk, Jazz, and Hip Hop Fusion. The public events will involve cross-cultural ensembles with
prominent representatives of several cultures.
•Oering free admission to all events makes them accessible to low-income people.
• Interactive Workshops and the Artist Meet & Greet Sessions after each workshop and the panel discussion after the concert attract an
audience interested in personal contact and learning from artists
• Press Release to all major media,
• Social Media (e.g., event page and music/dance groups on Facebook),
• Ads on Social Media,
• Email mailing list (e.g., music studios, community centers, personal email list), and Community Calendars particularly targeting Renton.
• PSAs/interviews on KBCS and KEXP radio if possible.
• Presentation by select group members at Bellevue Library; and if funded separately, a presentation or performance at a school.

Overview
Global Artists Collective is a nonprofit charitable organization incorporated in Washington State and
fiscally sponsored by the 501(c)(3) Shunpike. We have offices in Seattle and Woodinville; and Paradise
Valley Studies, a full audio-visual recording and rehearsal studio in Woodinville. Global Artists Collective
activities include: 1) artist management, booking and promotions for member performing artists; 2)
producing music/dance shows at festivals, theatres, schools, and other venues; and 3) creating and
conducting educational workshops and participatory events in music/dance.
Our programming features collaborations among artists from African, African American, Asian, Latinx,
and European traditions. Beyond presenting shows, we help artists—especially from historically
marginalized groups—build their careers through technical support, capacity-building, and professional
development.
Global Artists Collective delivers positive results for artists and communities in several ways:
x Economic—We help create sustainable career pathways for performing artists which ultimately
contributes to the creative economy.
x Advancing Equity—We address systemic inequity in the arts by highlighting Black artistry and other
cultural traditions that aren’t always well represented in traditional arts spaces, giving these
important voices a stronger platform.
x Public Benefit—GAC produces exciting new arts programs that bring people from different
backgrounds together. Our shows, workshops, and outreach happen in schools, libraries, and
community centers as well as theaters—making sure the arts reach people where they are, not
just in places that can feel exclusive or hard to access.
Mission
Global Artists Collective fosters cross-cultural dialogue, collaboration, and shared arts experiences to
build positive relationships within local communities. Our mission is to produce authentic, high-quality
arts events bridging social, cultural, and economic divides.

What is It?
Rhymes & Beats: Playing with Words When Rhythm Counts! is an
entertaining lyric-writing and beat-production program for all ages,
with interactive learning tailored for youth audiences.
Elements of the Program
The magical art of stringing together words to elicit emotions and
visual images in listeners’ minds is the work of Poets, Spoken Word
Artists, Song Lyricists, and Hip-Hop Rappers. Each artist reaches
deep into their intuitive self to create art. How does it feel to do
that? What inspires these artists? How does one start a new piece?
What are the roots of contemporary hip-hop lyricists and where is
the ‘real hip hop’ of today going? How do lyrics relate to the beat?
What’s ‘free-styling’ and how can you learn to do it? Join members
of band Global Heat as they present an engaging show and
discussion, involving the audience in spontaneously creating lyrics
and songs. You’ll hear about their personal experiences as artists,
and learn how ‘free-styling’ lyrics is similar to what a jazz musician
does during an improvised solo.
Participants try out their spoken word/poetry, rap and free-styling
after experiencing music pieces by the band Global Heat and
hearing how their members approach lyric writing through the
concept of playing with words against rhythmic backdrop.
Presenters have the option to combine a full Global Heat concert
with the Rhymes & Beats program. The Rhymes & Beats program
was developed in collaboration with King County Library Systems
(Seattle, WA) and Pioneer Center Youth Programs (Reno, NV).
