RE: Equity Commission Advisory Regarding ALPR Camera Operations
Councilmembers,
At its most recent meeting, the Renton Equity Commission discussed with Police Chief Jon Schuldt and
Deputy Chief Ryan Rutledge their concerns and questions regarding the paused Automated License Plate
Reader (ALPR) camera operations in the City of Renton. Following this discussion, the Commission
unanimously approved a motion to advise you of their opinion.
The Equity Commission supports the use of ALPR technology by the City of Renton and advises the council
to consider lifting the pause on these operations put into place by City Council motion on May 4th.
The Commission offers this advisory in recognition of the Council’s recent action to pause and your
ongoing deliberations regarding ALPR camera systems. We understand the importance of ensuring that
any public safety technology aligns with community values, applicable laws, and the city’s equity
commitments. The Commission encourages the Council to consider this recommendation as part of its
continued evaluation of ALPR-related policy decisions.
Please contact our staff liaison, Deputy CAO Kristi Rowland, with any questions you may have.
Respectfully submitted,
Camila Lagow, Chair Manami Imaoka, Vice Chair
