HomeMy WebLinkAboutEquity Commission - ALPR Camera Operations June 11, 2026 Renton City Council City of Renton 1055 South Grady Way Renton, WA 98057 RE: Equity Commission Advisory Regarding ALPR Camera Operations Councilmembers, At its most recent meeting, the Renton Equity Commission discussed with Police Chief Jon Schuldt and Deputy Chief Ryan Rutledge their concerns and questions regarding the paused Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) camera operations in the City of Renton. Following this discussion, the Commission unanimously approved a motion to advise you of their opinion. The Equity Commission supports the use of ALPR technology by the City of Renton and advises the council to consider lifting the pause on these operations put into place by City Council motion on May 4th. The Commission offers this advisory in recognition of the Council’s recent action to pause and your ongoing deliberations regarding ALPR camera systems. We understand the importance of ensuring that any public safety technology aligns with community values, applicable laws, and the city’s equity commitments. The Commission encourages the Council to consider this recommendation as part of its continued evaluation of ALPR-related policy decisions.
