On 06/21/2026, 1 was working as a uniformed police officer for the city of Renton.At approximately 2010 hours, I was dispatched to a hit-and-run collision with injuries at the intersection of S Tobin St and Shattuck Ave S. Portions of my involvement in the incident were captured on my department-issued bodycam. Any s tatements referred to have been paraphrased and summarized. While enroute, dispatch relayed that the reporting party was a witness.They described a gray Chevrolet Equinox bearing WA lic/BG76081 as being the offending vehicle. It was last seen going eastbound on S Tobin St. The suspect vehicle returned clear, with no record. I knew the plate likely had a typo based on its structure not matching that of a typical Washington State license plate for a vehicle of that body type. I ran WA lic/BGZ6081, which returned to a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox,with expired registration as of 05/14/2024. Notably,the registered owner had an address at 1400 Lake Washington Blvd N. When I arrived on scene, Officer Carstensen was talking to the witness/reporting party. In short,the witness described the driver of unit 1 as a balding, heavier-set white male in his 30s or 40s. Unit 1 was described running the stop sign at the intersection, causing the collision with unit 2, which was already in the intersection. Please see Officer Carstensen's report for more information. I spoke to the two occupants of unit 2. Both gave a similar account regarding what occurred, which I've summarized below: Unit 2 was driving westbound on S Tobin St.As it proceeded through the intersection at Lake Ave S, it was struck by unit 1, which was coming from the north, continuing south.The driver of unit 1 never got out of their vehicle to exchange information with them. Instead,they put the vehicle in reverse and drove east on S Tobin St.The only description they could provide of the driver was that he was a bald white male in his 40's wearing a light-colored t-shirt. Renton Regional Fire Authority responded to the scene and evaluated both occupants. Neither were medically transported. While they did not provide much in the way of new information,they did provide me with a written statement. Please refer to that for more detail. The driver of unit 2 identified her mother as the registered owner of the vehicle. She called her at my request. Once on the phone with her, she told me she was currently in Arlington,WA, leaving her unable to respond to the scene. She told me over the phone that she wished to press charges for hit-and-run against the driver of unit 1. Officer Carstensen and Officer Gall responded to the DoL address of the registered owner of unit 1.They located the vehicle,which was occupied by a male in the driver's seat, later identified as the registered owner. They also observed fresh damage to the front of the vehicle.The man reported he did not have liability insurance. He also stated that he was involved in a collision moments earlier in the same area where the reported one occurred. In contrast to other accounts, he claimed he was the victim of a hit-and-run, as the other involved vehicle supposedly fled the scene. For more information, please refer again to Officer Carstensen's supplemental report. In addition, Officer Gall captured photos of the damage to unit 1. Based on all of the above circumstances,to include, but not limited to: The damage to unit 1 being consistent with that of other involved party and witness accounts of the collision. Witnesses/involved parties providing a description of the driver of unit 1 apparently matching that of the registered owner. The driver/registered owner of unit 1 admitting they were involved in a collision mere moments before officers contacted him. The driver/registered owner of unit 1 failing to stop and exchange information at the scene of the collision. The registered owner of unit 2 advising they wished to press charges... Further,the driver/registered owner also violated RCW 46.30.020—Operating a motor vehicle without liability insurance and RCW 46.16A.030.5.0—Failure to renew expired registration greater than two months. SECTOR citations#6A0002938 (criminal traffic) and#6A0002939 (infraction traffic) document the above violations and were referred to the Renton Municipal Court Prosecutor's queue. Nothing further.
