On 07/23/2026, 1 was working as a uniformed police officer for the city of Renton. At approximately 1834 hours, I was dispatched to a road hazard at S 4th St and Shattuck Ave S. Portions of my involvement in the incident were captured on my department-issued bodycam.Any statements referred to have been paraphrased and summarized.Any photos and videos referred to were uploaded to the case file via AXON Capture. Investigation later revealed this to be a hit-and-run collision. The 911 caller advised that they heard a banging/crashing noise. When they went out to check on the noise, they saw a stop sign laying on its side in the street. When I arrived on scene, I found that the stop sign monitoring westbound traffic was indeed knocked over. The sign was knocked to the east from its base, indicating it was likely struck from the west. I captured photos of the sign (including the identifying stickers on the rear) and helped move it out of the roadway. I was flagged down by Kevin E Jacobson (02/01/1970), an employee at McClendon's (440 Rainier Ave S),who identified himself as the reporting party. He told me that about 20 minutes prior to our conversation, he was behind the store smoking a cigarette. Suddenly, he heard a loud crashing noise. He opened the gate to the exit at Shattuck Ave S and saw the sign on the ground. At the time, he was not sure what hit the sign. He then told me that the store managed to pull up surveillance footage that captured the incident. I went inside the store and met the manager, only identified as 'Steven.' He showed me video footage, which I also captured on my department-issued cell phone. The following is what I gathered from it: At about 1801 hours, per the video's timestamp, a white hatchback approaches the intersection from the north, headed south. It appears like a possible match to a Volkswagen Golf/GTI. Due to the angle of the video, I cannot see whether the vehicle stops at the stop sign monitoring southbound traffic at the intersection. The vehicle comes into frame just south of the sign and turns eastbound, striking the sign. Without stopping, the vehicle continues eastbound in lane 2 of westbound travel. The video is in too low of quality to decipher a license plate.
