CITY REPORT/ Marviane Van Cleave Maryjane introduced Cliff Long, Economic Development Director. Cliff shared a power point presentation with the RLAB members and provided an update on CED projects around town. Some of the major projects accomplished in 2017 included: New IKEA building, Hyatt Regency on Lake Washington, Hampton Inn & Suites, Kaiser Permanente and Car Max. Cliff touched on the marketing strategies of the Community and Economic Development Department indicating they continue to work on strengthening partnerships, use variable marketing tools such as Arts, Culture and History, create new opportunities for retail and small businesses, and help support retention of existing business. Cliff mentioned the City's 20 year partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, UW Valley Medical, Renton School District, and Renton Technical College. There are three new websites that were recently launched to help promote and market Renton and attract new investment. Three big initiatives for 2018 include the Civic Core Project; 200 Mill Development; and Implementing Way Finding Plan. Cliff talked about the 200 Mill Development—the City is negotiating with Cosmos Development Company to see if we can enter into an agreement. They are looking at the possibility for(3) residential structures; office space (plan to accommodate the school currently in the building) and small retail with restaurants and shops. As part of the proposal they want to facilitate a waterfront area and a plaza that connects to the Library. VI. KCLS REPORT/Amv Eler Amy Eggler emailed the KCLS monthly report to Library Advisory Board members and city staff. Her report addressed patron complaints about materials or content on the internet and how to respond or talking points that may be helpful when responding to people with concerns. Roze Koler stated that she was glad to be at the RLAB meeting and thanked the group for providing support for the Friends of the Renton Libraries book sale. The next book sale will be in Mid-September (Sept. 15 & 16, 2018) in the downtown Library. A brief discussion about the upcoming Sunset Celebration followed. Laurie Beden mentioned they had discussed collaborating at a table. Roze indicated that she plans on being there all day and members are welcome to join them. Lynne King plans to be there for the Celebration. Amy Eggler provided samples of promotional materials—post cards for the Sunset Celebration on June 16, 2018. Lynne King asked if the City was planning on providing hot dogs for this event. Maryjane stated that hot dogs will not be provided by City Staff. However, Food Trucks have been'scheduled for this event from 11:00-2:00 p.m. There will be several speakers for this ceremonial event (at least the first hour of the event). Grant funding was provided as part of this development and State Legislators will be attending and H:\Boards and Commissions\Librery Board\2018\2018 MAY201805 Minutes.docx . City of Renton Library Board Minutes May 16,2018 Page 3 of 4 some are speaking. Other activities planned for the celebration include: Chalk Art, performances and music (steel drum band). A question was asked if food trucks are cash based or free. Maryjane advised they will be cash based. Lynne King asked how the teenage issue was going—if there was any progress. Amy Eggler noted that the Police presence definitely helped improve the behavioral issues. She mentioned that this program wrapped up in April and that KCLS is keeping an eye on the situation. With the Sunset Park opening they are waiting to see how this changes the dynamics and what develops. VII. OLD BUSINE55 Community Advisory Committee (CAC) - Maryjane Van Cleave informed the group that the (CAC) would be presenting to the Committee of the Whole on Monday,June 4, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. and she invited the RLAB to attend if interested. This presentation is for the $70 Million Levy or Bond that is being considered for the November ballot. Highlands Celebration (Update) - Maryjane also advised the Sunset Celebration is on June 16 and noted that there will be a large number of speakers for this event due to Grant Funding. RLAB Presentation to Council (Options) - Maryjane Van Cleave advised the RLAB of options to present to Council. She talked with the Mayor and the Executive Assistant and one thought was that it may be a better option to present to the Committee of the Whole (COW). Presenting to the COW may allow more time to cover information. The calendar for COW appeared to be full for June and July since Council is off during some of that time period. August was looking like a better time slot—they meet any Monday except the last Monday of the month. Kim Unti suggested they look at September since she was not available on August 6 or August 20. Lynne King also suggested that the board might want to present or inform the council of what was accomplished in 2018 and what is planned for 2019 and present both years together. Maryjane will check on availability for September. Renton Community Center"Free" Library— Kim Unti reported that the free library has gone really well thanks to members taking a week at a time and organizing the books. It was noted that the Pre-School is there now, but this may change as summer approaches. There may not be as many children visiting the library cart during the summer months. Kim Unti passed around a sign-up schedule for the board members to volunteer at least once a month to bring in or organize books that are donated. Kim mentioned that a woman has been providing books to her; she has them on pallets sorted by age. Lynne King asked if the recreation group could use "older" age books for the pool. Jaime Greene indicated that they could make use of these books and requested that Lynne bring them in to the next meeting. Maryjane reiterated that if the RLAB wanted sigriage for the "free" library other than the laminated versions to let her know and she could check into it. H:\Boards and Commissions\Library Board\2018\2018 MAY\2018 OS Minutes.docx City of Renton Library Board Minutes May 16,2018 Page 4 of 4 VIII. NEW BUSINESS Report from the Board Forum—Kim Unti attended the KCLS Board Forum on Saturday morning. She was really impressed and thought they did a great job of providing guidance on how to do a presentation in front of Council. Some ideas on how to connect better with Council other than presentations included things like: being present for Community Services Committee, attend Council meetings and use stories for Community Talk Time, and writing a Letter to Editor in Renton Reporter. The Forum group also discussed the collection process— budget information and how they select books. Reference materials are showing less use. People can make suggestions for what the library has available. Laurie Beden also mentioned that she was impressed with Lisa Bloom. IX. BOARD UPDATES AND PROGRE55 Laurie Beden stated that RLAB is looking good with their Timeline and asked if a date had been scheduled to attend a School Board Meeting. Jaime Greene said that she had emailed Damion's assistant and has not heard back. She will need to follow-up with her and report back. Erica Richey asked if there was a date scheduled for the Summer Reading Event. Amy Eggler will check and get details for this program. KCLS is running a little late this year in getting the program launched. Lynne King asked if anyone was interested in walking with a group for Renton River Days Parade. Kim Unti indicated she had other commitments and would not be able to make it. Roze Koler advised that the RLAB Timeline has the Multi-Cultural Event listed under October. This event is scheduled for September 14& 15, 2018. The Timeline should be corrected. X. ADJOURNMENT Jaime Greene made a motion to adjourn the May meeting. Erica Richey seconded.
