Vi. KCS REPORTIAmv Eler
Amy Eggler emailed the KCLS monthly report to Library Advisory Board members and city
staff providing highlights on some of the KCLS summer programs and events, along with some
photos. Amy also noted that it was the 3rd Anniversary of opening the Renton Downtown
Library. KCS has had a very busy summer this year as indicated by numbers in her report.
Laurie Beden asked if the City has had a presentation about the new Highlands Development
specific to the shopping center that is going in. Maryjane indicated that Cliffong presented
to the RLAB regarding CED projects. This particular praject would be handled through
Community and Economic Development (CED). aurie stressed that this development is huge
and the ibrary should be fully apprised and aware of what is coming as this could affect the
need far additional staff and services. Amy Eggler noted that this area has been prone to
"squatters" and issues with drug dealing. KCLS is hoping to see quick action and they would
welcome the new development as a deterrent from this sart of activity.
Erica Richey raised a question about the KCLS Summer Reading Program and the method by
which the halfway prizes were distributed. The prize for this program was free tickets to Wild
Waves and each facility was provided with a limited number of tickets based on the size of
the facility and how much business the library location does. Unfortunately due to
unforeseen circumstances, KCLS ran out of prizes within the first two days they were
available. KCLS allowed two (2) tickets per reader and they had both adult readers and
children readers. And, unfortunately some patrons abused the ticket rules and were taking
mare than their share of tickets. Amy Eggler indicated that KCLS is re-evaluating their process
and will find a solution so this does not happen again.
John Sheller, Government Relations Manager for KCLS attended the August 22 Meeting and
noted that he works closely with Amy Eggler. In his role at KCLS he is there to help support
the Renton Library Advisory Board in any way that they feel is important.
Kim Unti stated that the KClS Forum was very helpful and thought the panel did a good job.
John Sheller indicated that KCLS will continue to have a Forurn once a year for Advisory
Boards and noted at the last forum the panel talked about how to prepare a report to
Council. John Sheller also mentioned that the Enumclaw graup had a good suggestion
regarding Counci) presentations. They recammended going to Council more than once a
year;ta go in during the public comment portion of the meeting and provide updates, thus
having a presence with the City.
John Sheller also thanked the RLAB board members. He noted that the RLAB was helpful in
the Strategic Planning Process.

aurie Beden stated she had attended the Forum and thought they did a great job. She also
nated that it was the first chance to meet Lisa Rosenblum, KCLS Director and thought she was
very easy to communicate with.
VII. OLD BUSINE55
Renton Community Center"Free" ibrary—Kim Unti passed around a sign-up sheet for the
board members to volunteer at least once a month to bring in or organize books that are
donated. Kim asked Maryjane if she had received the dimensions for new signage. Maryjane
said that she had received her email and will be working on getting that done. A brief
discussion followed as to whether the board members still had supplies available for the free
library and it was determined that there were enaugh contributions for now.
The free library has not been used as much recently; however, the fall programs will be
starting up at the Renton Community Center soon and this will bring more children into the
Communityenter. Maryjane noted that the Fall Pre-School Program starts on August 31.
Maryjane also noted that there will be an Open House at RCC. There has been success with
the free library; people especially like that the children can keep the books and take them
with them. The library is used more when programs are in progress—children wait while
parents play basketball, etc. and they have heard good feedback from staff.
Programs at RCC- Maryjane offered to send an electronic copy of the "What's Happening"
Brochure ta board members. It was agreed to wait until the electronic version with live links
was available.
VIII. NEW BUSINE55
Friends of Renton I.ibraries Annual Book Sale (Sept. 15 &16, 2018)—Laurie Beden indicated
that she is on the Friday schedule far helping with the boak sale. She asked if the RLAB
members wanted to donate a basket again this year. Board members agreed they would be
interested in doing that if Laurie wanted to take the lead. aurie volunteered to purchase
items for a basket and collect funds fram board members once cost was determined.
IX. BOARD UPDATES AND PROGRESS
Kim Unti reported that one of the RAB goals for September was to review and update the gaals
and timeline for the Rentan Library Advisory Board. Board members agreed they would like to
have this put on the Agenda for September instead of having an additional planning meeting.
