SFLASH SLOCKS FO�t ]BASYC IDYSPERSXON
Splash blocks are the simplest way to dzsperse flows from a roof area. Downspout splash blocks or
dovvnspout/drain extensions with splash blocks are often�he anIy hardware required for this type of
system. Vegetated flowpaths do the work of slowin�and cleaning sto�rrnwater runoff. In general, if the
�round is sloped away from the foundation, and thexe is adequate vegetation and area£ox e�ective
dispersion, splash blocks will adequately disperse storm r�,inoff If the ground is fairly level, or if the
s#ructure includes a basement, nr if foundation drains are proposed, splash blocks with downspout
extensio�s znay be a better choice because the dischar�e point is moved away from the foundation.
Downspout extensions may include piping to a splash block that is a considerable dastance from the roof
downspout, provided the runo�'cazt travel �hrough a well-�egetated area as described below.

Fi�ure C.2.4.A (p. C-SS)shows details of a roof downspout and splash block. The fotlowing
specif cations apply to use of sptash blocks for baszc dispersion:
1. No more than 700 square feet of roof area may be drained to a single splash biock.
2. A "vegetated flowpath segment" of at least 50 fEet in len�h must be available along the fi�owpath
that runoff would follow upon dischar�e from the splash block.
3. For purpos�s of rr►aintaining adequate separation of f�ows discharged frorn adjacent dispersion
devices,the ve�etated flowpath se�ment for the splash binck must not overlap witn other
flowpath se�ments, except those associatcd wath sheet flow from a non-native pervious surface.
PER�'ORA'�'ED P��'E CONNECT�ON
Perforated pipe connectians are intended to convey concentrated runoff from impervious surfaces
(usually roof runa�directiy to a tocal drainage systern while providin�sotr�e infiltration of that runoff in
the process.They are required for any pipe connection of roof downspo�ts to the Iocal draina�e system
regardless of�he extent to whach flow control BMl's are required or being used onsite. Perforated pipe
connections are intended to provide for some infiltration durin�,drier periods (late sprin�throu�h early
fali), which may help dampen the fiasniness of stream f�ows in de�eloped areas and provide some
�,round��ater rechar;e. Dezrin�the wet winter months, however, this BMP likely provides littie or no flow
control benefits. Therefore, it is not ccedited with miti�atin�target impervious surface.

If the perforated pipe cnnnection flow control BMP is required for a project,the fotlowin�nr►aintenance
and operation instructions must be recorded as an at�achment to the required declara#ion of co�enant
a�ad gran#o�'easement per Requirement 3 of Section C.13.3 (p. C-1 S). Th� intent of these instructions is
to explain to future property owners,the purpose of tiae BMP and how it must be maintained and
operated. These instructions are intended to be a minimum; DDES may require additional instructions
based on site-specific conditions. Also, as the Co�nty�,ains more experience with the maintenance and
operation.of tk�ese BMPs, future updates to tI�►e instructions will be posted on Kin�Caunty's Surface
Warer Design Manual websi�e_
