Pre-application meeting summary: Brent Manley, CPA, Finance Director, New
Horizon School Board of Directors and Tami Gillman, Board Consultant, New
Horizon School met with Angelea Weihs, Associate Planner, City of Renton to
discuss the proposed upgrade of the reader board located at NHS. We had hired
Plumb Signs to upgrade the board by painting it and installing software as the
lettering is manual; sign is decades old and broken so lettering won’t stay on the
sign properly. Plumb Signs told us that the City of Renton would not provide the
needed permit to upgrade our monument sign. We requested a meeting with Ms.
Weihs to discuss the matter. She was extremely helpful, clarifying why we wouldn’t
be allowed a permit. We explained that there are extenuating circumstances about
which we would like everyone to be made aware at which time she advised that we
should explain the circumstances in a letter to the planning department. After
doing so, she later contacted us to let us know that the planning department
understood our reasoning and concerns, suggesting that we file a variance request
with the planning department.
