WSDOT Exchange Property
City Transfer crew continued to use the conveyor belt to move native soils from the
Rolling Hills excavation. A track hoe and two earth movers placed this material to the
area above the conveyor belt. A roller compacted the material.
Dozer and track hoe spread native soil at primary layer Elev. 185 from Sta. 10+50 to
15+75. The geogrid was cut and placed. A roller compacted the soil. The large dozer
was down due to a broken track.
9:00 – Dan Quehl, Mayes Inspector on site.
9:30 – Ken Viren, WSDOT, was not on site, today.
Benson Hill Road
Gary Merlino crew continued excavation of the hillside east of the roadway and using it
to backfill the Benson Bulb-out. Two earth movers transported native soil across the
roadway, while a dozer spread the material. A roller was on site for compaction. This fill
is currently 12 ft. below the roadway.
Two flaggers were used for traffic control. Traffic, on both north and southbound lanes,
was stopped for several minutes to place material.
Thunder Hill Creek and Mine
10:00 – Arrived on site, NB/I-405 shoulder, below the WSDOT Exchange Property, where
Malcolm Drilling crew and drill rig were in process of drilling their second 48” well casing.
Met with Wayne Broughton, Malcolm Drilling Superintendent, Joel Theodore, CH2Hill, and
Matt, Merlino, Foreman. Joel informed me that they had stopped drilling and were under a
stop work order. Well casing #1 had been drilled approx. 30’ deep and it had reached the north
wall of the mine. Well casing #2 was started 6’ ft. to the south. They had drilled 15’ until the
stop work order was received in the field. Wayne and his Malcolm crew remained on site.
1:15 – Matt, Merlino foreman, informed me that they were given an O.K. to proceed. Called
John McCreery, who confirmed that they could proceed.
Drill rig re-started drilling well casing #2.
1:30 - Auger broke thru the top of the mine approx. 30 ft. deep. Tim Lagunes, Bravo
Enviromental , lowered a RSD Omni 3 – video camera, 40’ for viewing of mine and creek.
Wood shoring on sides and ceiling was observed. Also, timber debris was littered in creek.
2:10 – Drilled well casing #3 was started 10’ to the south. Robert Patcheck on site.
2:30 – Stopped drilling and lowered video camera for viewing. Robert said there was more
water than expected.
3:00 – Because spoils from drilling had blocked the flow of the creek, the drill rig used the
steel casing to clean-out debris.
3:15 – Water flowing at the outfall near Benson Road, was reported.
3:30 – Started setting temporary steel casing in shaft #2. Drill rig turned casing to clear sides
of shaft.
4:45 - Set casing in well # 2 and started placing steel casing in well #3. Covered well casing
#1.
