Attended the WSDOT classes for Construction Inspection Documentation from 7:00 to 9:30am. Performed observation of, and soil density testing on common borrow fill at the following locations: Over SF-55 and SF-20 Geogrid Reinforcing from stations 11+50 to 14+25; continuing build up along Cedar Road from stations 10+00 to 13+00 for the Conveyor Belt extension and access to the belt. Performed soil density testing at above locations per T310 and SOP 615 (Method 1) using the Troxler nuclear density gauge model 3440. Used moisture density curve of 116.9 pcf with a 12.8% optimum moisture per Mayes Testing lab number T08092-21. The tests met the required compaction of 95%. The contractor was informed of test results. See attached Field Density Report and Density Worksheets for results and locations. This common borrow used was being transported by a conveyor belt from the Rolling Hills south of Thunder Creek. While the Geogrid Reinforcing was being installed from stations 11+50 to 14+25 prior to fill, the following was verified: 1. Checked to assure that the proper type of Geogrid reinforcing was being used and was not damaged. 2. Checked to assure the minimum embedment depth was attained according to approved plans & specs. 3. Checked that Geogrid was overlapped 2-6 inches and attached using twist ties placed at 1' to 2' spacing 4. A total of 24 rolls of SF-55 and 2 rolls of SF-20 Geogrid Reinforcing were placed today. 5. That fill being placed did not exceed 1'. The subcontractor used a laser to check elevations on each lift. 6. That Geogrid was laying flat and not bundled up prior to fill. 7. Covering unused Geogrid with black plastic to protect from the sun. Spoke with Mike Ross with CDB and approximately 5698 cubic yards of material was transported by belt. The CTI subcontractor placed a total of 2 - 1' lifts of fill today over the Geogrid Reinforcing at noted stations and to an elevation of 185'. The cut of the 2:1 slope was completed from stations 11+00 to 15+95 to finish grade from elevations 171' to 183' where Geogrid was placed. This location was then hoepacked. CTI extended the Geogrid Reinforcing onto the 2:1 slope after reaching minimum embedment depth cutting the Geogrid longer than required and some embedment depths were shortened due to the competent rock that was encountered, this being approved by the Engineer. This in turn caused the excess Geogrid to be cut and discarded when the 2:1 slope was cut to finish grade. Ken Viren with WSDOT performed Soil Density testing per T310 and obtained a sample per SOP 615 method 1. Bob Pyle compliance inspector with WSDOT visited the site to check progress on the project...
