The Boeing Apron E project consists of 2 major components: The new Paint
hangar facility building and three new production aircraft stalls.
The Boeing Company is planning to convert the existing S1 parking lot into three production
stalls for aircrafts, a two-bay paint hangar, and a new utility building. This will require demolition
of the existing fire station, which will be relocated north to Boeing’s existing S2 parking lot. The
relocated fire station will be under separate permits and review .
Utilities from the main Boeing plant north - via N. 6th street will be used to feed part of the utility
needs of the project
Landscaping, a 25 foot high sound wall and blast fences are incorporated in the design.
Approximately 1,000 parking stalls will be displaced by this project. Boeing currently has
approximately 1,500 available stalls located in Lot E7, 10-20 Garage, Lot E1 and 10-18 Garage.
A new stormwater treatment system will be installed including an oil/ water separator vault
system.
Paint hangar facility building
The construction of a new paint facility building approximately 235’ x 307’ will include: two
aircraft bays to accommodate 737 aircraft up to a MAX 10 model, but no larger models; three
mechanical chase blocks located at the center and both ends of the building (running north-
south direction); and a two-story facility support function area to the south of the hangar spaces,
and to include various storage and process support areas as well as office and conference room
spaces.
A stand-alone Accessory Utility Building approximately 35’ x 162’ will house paint hangar
supported various utility equipment that includes boilers, waste tanks, electrical substations,
generator and their associated mechanical support system.
The proposed paint hangar is an unfueled Group I aircraft paint hangar with associated
functions that are designed per the International Building Code 2015 as adopted by State
Building Code Council WAC 51-50 and amended by Renton Municipal Code 4-5-060.
The proposed function and the required specialized equipment for this function drives us to the
Special Industrial Occupancy classification for this building, with a mixed occupancy of S-1 for
the high-bay areas and accessory H occupancies for paint mixing/storage, with associated B
(office), A (locker rooms/conference rooms) occupancies.
Boeing requires the use of stacker cranes in the current painting process. These stacker cranes
are a specialized piece of equipment hung from the overhead structure, running on rails
attached to the bottom chord of trusses, and telescoping down to the painting envelope around
the aircraft.
The use and construction of the proposed paint hangar will require the building height to be a
minimum of 85’ high, as shown on the preceding cross-section. The tail height of the 737 MAX
is 40’-8”. The estimated truss depth for this span is 15’-0”. The depth of the parapet (min. 42”
high at the roof ridge) plus structural decking, insulation and roofing is 5’-0”, and finally, the
retracted depth of the stacker crane is 23’-0”. The proposed height of 85’-0” gives us a minimal
clearance at the vertical tailfin of 1’-4” to bottom of stacker crane platform. This 85’ height is
estimated as a minimum height for the building.
Production aircraft stalls
The proposed new stalls project will consist removal of existing asphalt,
New utilities, electrical, lighting, mechanical, sewer, storm and fire.
The apron will be re- graded and new concrete and asphalt will be laid.
The three stalls will be at the north boundary of lot S1. Each stall shall include blast fence and
sound wall directly behind each aircraft. Location of each blast fence shall be coordinated with
utilities and its routings. Design of trenches for utilities including shoring, dewatering, bedding/fill
materials, compaction and pavement restoration. Trenching of utilities from the main Boeing
plant under north 6th street to lot S1.
New spill containment systems and of de-icing systems will be installed.
Located between the west and middle aircraft stalls are a double bay super crew shelter (24’ x
50’) and a double bay super tool cabana structure (24’ x 65’) that holds men and women
restrooms. A standard single-bay crew shelter (12’ x 30’) and a single bay tool cabana (12’ x
30’) would be positioned east of the easternmost aircraft stall.
