VarmaUnionAveNBIRRMay23,2014Page2(AgC).TheMderwoodsoilsarederivedfromglacialtillthatformonBto15percentslopesandarelistedashavinga“slighttomoderate”erosionhazard.ThenearsurfacesoilsatthesitehavebeendisturbedbynaturalweatheringprocessesThathaveoccurredsincetheirdeposition.Thegeologicmapforthesiteareaindicatesthesiteissituatedinanareaofglacialff11(Qgt).AnexcerptfromthegeologicmapisincludedatFigure4.SubsurfaceConditionsSubsurfaceconditionswereevaluatedbyexcavatingfivetestpitsacrossthesite.Thenearsurfacesoilsconsistedof0to112-to1-footoftopsoilwithnumerousrootsovermediumdensefinegrainedsandwithsiltandvaryingamountsofsmallgravel.Weinterpretthesesandysoiistorepresenttheweatheredsandyoutwashdeposits.Atdepthsof3to4feet,weencounteredadenseinduratesiltysandwithgravel,representativeofglacialfill.Theindurateglacial1111wasobservedtothefulldepthexploredinallourtestpits.Theobservedstrafigraphygenerallyconfirmedthemappedstratigraphy.ThelocationsofourexplorationsareincludedontheSitePlanasFigure2.ThesoilsencounteredwerevisuallyclassifiedinaccordancewiththeUnifiedSoilClassiflcationSystem(USCS),acopyofwhichisattachedasFigure5.TheTestPitLogsareattachedasFigures6aandfib.LaboratoryAnalysisOurgeotechnicallaboratorytestswerecompletedonarepresentativesoilsamplecollectedfromthetestpitsatthesite.Thetestsperformedincludedagrainsizeanalysis,cationexchangecapacityandorganiccontent.Ourgrainsizelaboratorytestresultsindicatedthatthesoilsonthesiteconsistofsandwithsiltandminorgravel.Theattachedlaboratorytestingsheetsgraphicallypresenttheseresults.Copiesofthegrainsizeandcation/organictestsareattached.WTABLE1LABORATORYTESTRESULTSFORON-SITESOILS.GravelContentSandContentSilUClayContentDepth-SoilType(percent)(percent)(percent)2to3.5feet28.045.027.0OutwashSandwISiltTheminimumrequiredCECis5mEqllOOginorderforsoilstobeusedasatreatmentlayerbeneathawaterqualityfacility,suchasporouspavement.Thecationexchangecapacityforthesamplewas15.7Na,mEqIlOOgandtheorganiccontentwas4.4%dryweight,whichmeetstherequirement.AporouspavementsectioncanbeprovidedatyourrequestGroundwaterConditionsNoevidenceofseasonalgroundwatersuch,asmottling,wasobservedattheuppercontactoftheglacialtillat3to4feetbelowthegroundsurfaceinthetestpitsatthetimeofexcavation.Basedonthenatureofthenearsurfacesoils,weanticipatefluctuationsinthelocalgroundwaterlevelswilloccurinresponsetoprecipitationpatterns,generaldevelopmentinthearea,andsiteutilization. Varna.UnIonAvoNE.IRRMay23,2014PageCONCLUSIONSANDRECOMMENOAPONSBasedonthesoilsencounteredinourexplorations,laboratoryanalysis,andourengineehnganalysis,weconcludethatlimitedinfiltrationofstormwaterisfeasibleintheshallowonsitesoilsencounteredonthesite.Theshallowsoilsappeartohaveadequatepermeabilityandstoragecapacitytoinfiltrateaportionofthestormwateronthesite,providedadequatedesign,constructionandmaintenancepracticesareused.Werecommendthatperviouspavementorpayersbeconsideredfortheshareddrivewayandparkingareasoftheresidences.Infiltrationtrenchesordrywellsmaybeutilizedfortheroofrunoffatthesite.Specificgeotechnicalrecommendationsforearthworkandbuildingdevelopmentmaybeprovideduponrequest.StormwaterIntiltrationWerecommendthatperviouspavementorpayersbeutilizedfortheshareddrivewayandparkingareasoftheresidences.Thiswillreducetheamountofrequiredinfiltrationviafrenchsystems.Fortheroofsystems,stormwaterinfiltrationratesweredeterminedinaccordancewiththeKingCountySurfaceWaterDesign(2009)(KCSWDM).Weperformedasieveanalysisonarepresentativesoilsamplecollectedfromthetestpitsatthesite.Weexpectthatthetrencheswillneedtoberelativelyshallow,2.5to3feetbgs(belowgroundsurface)toprovidetheminimumseparationfromTheunderlyingWIsoils.Basedontheresultsofoursieveanalysisandourexperience,thesandwithminorsiltandgravelarecomparableto“mediumsand”(SoilType28)to‘linesand,loamysand”(SoilType3).AccordingtotheKCSWDMsection4.5.1,the‘linesand,loamy”soilsrelatedto60feetper1,000sqifofrootareaforlimitedinfiltrationingravelfilledtrenches.Thefollowingformulaisusedtocalculatethelengthofroofdownspouttrenches:1=(Ar/i000)Q)(k)whereAristheareaoftheroof,Iisthelengthofthetrenchrequiredpersoiltype,andkistheregionalscalefactor.Thescalefactorforthesubjectsiteis1.Appropriatedesign,constructionandmaintenancemeasureswillberequiredtoensuretheInfiltrationratecanbeeffectivelymaintainedovertime.Itshouldbenotedthatspecialcareisrequiredduringthegradingandconstructionperiodstoavoidfinesedimentcontaminationoftheinfiltrationsystem.Thismaybeaccomplishedbyusinganalternativestormwatermanagementlocationduringgradingandconstructionactivities.Allcontractorsworkingonthesite(buildersandsubcontractors)shouldbeadvisedtoavoid“dirty”stormwaterflowingtothesite’sstormwatersystemduringconstructionandlandscapingactivitiesatthesite,Concretetrucksshouldnotbewashedorcleanedon-site.Suspendedsolidscouldclogtheunderlyingsoilandreducetheinfiltrationrateforthesystem.Toreducepotentialcloggingoftheinfiltrationsystems,theinfiltrationsystemshouldnotbeconnectedtothestormwaterrunoffsystemuntilafterconstructioniscompleteandthesiteareaislandscaped,pavedorotherwiseprotected.Temporarysystemsmaybeutilizedthroughconstruction.Periodicsweepingofthepavedareaswillhelpextendthelifeoftheinfiltrationsystem.4,.
