36of50MaintenanceGuidelinesTheprimarypurposeoftheStormwaterManagementStormFiIteristofilteroutandpreventpollutantsfromenteringourwaterways.Likeanyeffectivefiltrationsystem,periodicallythesepollutantsmustberemovedtorestoretheStormFiltertoitsfullefficiencyandeffectiveness.Maintenancerequirementsandfrequencyaredependentonthepollutantloadcharacteristicsofeachsite.Maintenanceactivitiesmayberequiredintheeventofachemicalspillorduetoexcessivesedimentloadingfromsiteerosionorextremestorms.Itisagoodpracticetoinspectthesystemaftermajorstormevents.MaintenanceProceduresAlthoughtherearelikelymanyeffectivemaintenanceoptions,webelievethefollowingprocedureisefficientandcanbeimplementedusingcommonequipmentandexistingmaintenanceprotocols.Atwostepprocedureisrecommendedasfollows:1.InspectionInspectionofthevaultinteriortodeterminetheneedformaintenance.2.MaintenanceCartridgereplacementSedimentremovalInspectionandMaintenanceTimingAtleastonescheduledinspectionshouldtakeplaceperyearwithmaintenancefollowingaswarranted.First,aninspectionshouldbedonebeforethewinterseason.Duringtheinspectiontheneedformaintenanceshouldbedeterminedand,ifdisposalduringmaintenancewillberequired,samplesoftheaccumulatedsedimentsandmediashouldbeobtained.Inadditiontothesetwoactivities,itisimportanttochecktheconditionoftheStormFilterunitaftermajorstormsforpotentialdamagecausedbyhighflowsandforhighsedimentaccumulationthatmaybecausedbylocalizederosioninthedrainagearea.ItmaybenecessarytoadjusttheinspectioWmaintenancescheduledependingontheactualoperatingconditionsencounteredbythesystem.Ingeneral,inspectionactivitiescanbeconductedatanytime,andmaintenanceshouldoccur,ifwarranted,inlatesummertoearlyfallwhenflowsintothesystemarenotlikelytobepresent.MaintenanceFrequencyTheprimaryfactorcontrollingtimingofmaintenanceoftheStormFilterissedimentloading.Aproperlyfunctioningsystemwillremovesolidsfromwaterbytrappingparticulatesintheporousstructureofthefiltermediainsidethecartridges.Theflowthroughthesystemwillnaturallydecreaseasmoreandmoreparticulatesaretrapped.Eventuallytheflowthroughthecartridgeswillbelowenoughtorequirereplacement.Itmaybepossibletoextendtheusablespanofthecartridgesbyremovingsedimentfromupstreamtrappingdevicesonaroutineas-neededbasisinordertopreventmaterialfrombeingre-suspendedanddischargedtotheStormFiltertreatmentsystem.Siteconditionsgreatlyinfluencemaintenancerequirements.StormFilterunitslocatedinareaswitherosionoractiveconstructionmayneedtobeinspectedandmaintainedmoreoftenthanthosewithfullystabilizedsurfaceconditions.Themaintenancefrequencymaybeadjustedasadditionalmonitoringinformationbecomesavailableduringtheinspectionprogram.Areasthatdevelopknownproblemsshouldbeinspectedmorefrequentlythanareasthatdemonstratenoproblems,particularlyaftermajorstorms.Ultimately,inspectionandmaintenanceactivitiesshouldbescheduledbasedonthehistoricrecordsandcharacteristicsofanindividualStormFiltersystemorsite.ItisrecommendedthatthesiteownerdevelopadatabasetoproperlymanageStormEilterinspectionandmaintenanceprograms.Priortothedevelopmentofthemaintenancedatabase,thefollowingmaintenancefrequenciesshouldbefollowed:InspectionOnetimeperyearAftermajorstormsMaintenanceAsneeded,basedonresultsofinspection(Theaveragemaintenancelifecycleisapproximately1-3years)PerRegulatoryrequirementIntheeventofachemicalspillFrequenciesshouldbeupdatedasrequired.TherecommendedinitialfrequencyforinspectionisonetimeperyearStormFilterunitsshouldbeinspectedaftermajorstorms.Second,ifwarranted,amaintenance(replacementofthefiltercartridgesandremovalofaccumulatedsediments)shouldbeperformedduringperiodsofdryweather2
