Thank you for contacting the Davey Tree Expert Company to inspect the 32 inch diameter Douglas
fir located on the North West corner of Olympia Ave NE and NE 7th St. The Douglas fir measures
32 inches in diameter at 54 inches from ground level and is approximately 110 feet tall.
The Douglas fir tree was topped at some time in the past at 55 feet. Now the tree has two large co-
dominant tops that measure 16 inches in diameter and 17 inches in diameter, they are 45-55 feet
tall. An aerial inspection was performed on 3/18/19 to measure the size of the co -dominant tops
and to inspect for decay at the original topping cut. The stem was tested for decay by using a
sounding mallet. There was no visual decay present at the site of the old topping cut, but it is
possible that there is internal decay in the main stem below the attachments of the co -dominant
tops, based on the sound of the mallet. The distance between the two tops is 36 inches above the
old topping cut.
The topping of this large Douglas fir tree some 30 years ago has jeopardized the structure of the
tree. The greatest potential for failure would be the loss of one of the co -dominant tops or the
complete stem failure just below the old topping cut. This could result in severe damage to the
house below or people passing by on the street. Other factors that have compromised the stability
of the Douglas fir, is the limited area for root growth and the potential root loss from the
construction of Olympia Ave NE that was put in a few years ago. In general Douglas fir trees are
very susceptible to complete failure with moderate root loss.
My recommendation is for the removal of this tree. Since the tree is located within striking
distance of several houses and the street below. If the tree were to fail at the previous topping
cut or complete root failure, the consequences would be severe.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the inspection of the Douglas
fir in question.
Thank you,
