A NON -WOVEN GEOTEXTILE SHOULD BE PLACED BETWEEN
THE SUBGRADE AND AGGREGATE BASE AS WELL AS SIDE
SLOPES OF THE OPEN GRADE BASE PERIMETER TO PREVEN'
CLOGGING OF INFILTRATION SURFACES. AASHTO M-288
(AASHTO 2010) PROVIDES GUIDANCE FOR SELECTION OF
GEOTEXTILES SPECIFICALLY FOR SEPARATION AND
DRAINAGE APPLICATIONS. THE GEOTEXTILE MUST PASS
WATER AT A GREATER RATE THAN THE SUBGRADE SOILS
(0.5 INCHES/HR) AND APPARENT OPENING SIZE OF 0.25 M)
MAX.
REFER TO THE REPORT PREPARED BY GEORESOURCES,
LLC FOR FURTHER GEOTECHNICAL AND PAVEMENT
RECOMMENDATIONS
_"GEOTECHNICAL CONSULTATION LETTER: POROUS
PAVEMENT FOR THE SLAVIC CHRISTIAN CENTER"
DATED: OCTOBER 22, 2013
CONTACT. BRAD P. BIGGERSTAFF, LEG &
DANA C. BIGGERSTAFF, P.E.
OFFICE: 253-896-1011
FAX: 253-896-2633
1. SUBGRADE SHALL BE SCARIFIED PRIOR TO
PLACEMENT OF NON -WOVEN GEOTEXTILE AND FINAL
GRADING. FINAL GRADING SHOULD BE COMPLETED
BY MACHINERY OPERATING ON A PRELIMINARY
SUBGRADE THAT IS AT LEAST 12 INCHES HIGHER
THAN FINAL GRADE OR STRUCTURES TO DISTRIBUTE
EQUIPMENT LOAD (e.g., STEEL PLATES OR
AGGREGATE BASE MATERIAL). FINAL EXCAVATION
THEN PROCEEDS AS MACHINERY IS PULLING BACK
AND TRAVELING ON PRELIMINARY GRADE AS FINAL
GRADE IS EXCAVATED.
2. TO PREVENT COMPACTION WHEN INSTALLING THE
AGGREGATE BASE, THE FOLLOWING STEPS
(BACK -DUMPING) SHOULD BE FOLLOWED:
(1) - THE AGGREGATE DISCHARGE BASE IS DUMPED
ONTO THE SUBGRADE FROM THE EDGE OF THE
INSTALLATION AND AGGREGATE IS THEN PUSHED
OUT ONTO THE SUBGRADE.
(2) - TRUCKS THEN DUMP SUBSEQUENT LOADS FROM
ON TOP OF THE AGGREGATE BASE AS THE
INSTALLATION PROGRESSES.
3. AVOID SUBGRADE PREPARATION DURING THE WET
SEASON (SOIL COMPACTION INCREASES
SIGNIFICANTLY IS SOIL IS WET).
4. IF MACHINERY (RECOMMENDED LGP EQUIPMENT)
MUST ACCESS THE FINAL GRADE, LIMIT THE ACCESS
TO A SPECIFIC TRAVEL WAY THAT CAN BE TILLED
BEFORE APPLICATION OF THE BASE AGGREGATE OR
PLACE HEAVY STEEL PLATES ON SUBGRADE AND
LIMIT TRAFFIC TO THE PROTECTIVE COVER.
5. NOTE: ALLOWING HEAVY MACHINERY ON PERMEABLE
PAVING SUBGRADES DURING WET OR SATURATED
CONDITIONS WILL RESULT IN DEEP COMPACTION
(OFTEN 3 FEET) AND CANNOT BE COMPENSATED FOR
BY SHALLOW TILLING OR RIPPING SOIL.

APPROPRIATE DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE
MEASURES WILL BE REQUIRED TO ENSURE THE
INFILTRATION RATE CAN BE EFFECTIVELY MAINTAINED
OVER TIME. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT SPECIAL CARE IS
REQUIRED DURING THE GRADING AND CONSTRUCTION
PERIODS TO AVOID FINE SEDIMENT CONTAMINATION OF
THE INFILTRATION SYSTEM. THIS MAY BE ACCOMPLISHED
BY USING AN ALTERNATIVE STORM WATER MANAGEMENT
LOCATION DURING GRADING AND CONSTRUCTION
ACTIVITIES. ALL CONTRACTORS WORKING ON THE SITE
(BUILDERS AND SUBCONTRACTORS) SHOULD BE ADVISED
TO AVOID "DIRTY" STORMWATER FLOWING TO THE SITE'S
STORMWATER SYSTEM DURING CONSTRUCTION AND
LANDSCAPING ACTIVITIES AT THE SITE. CONCRETE
TRUCKS SHOULD NOT BE WASHED OR CLEANED ON-SITE.
SUSPENDED SOLIDS COULD CLOG THE UNDERLYING SOIL
AND REDUCE THE INFILTRATION RATE FOR THE SYSTEM.
TO REDUCE POTENTIAL CLOGGING OF THE INFILTRATION
SYSTEMS, THE INFILTRATION SYSTEM SHOULD NOT BE
CONNECTED TO THE STORMWATER RUNOFF SYSTEM UNTIL
AFTER CONSTRUCTION IS COMPLETE AND THE SITE AREA
IS LANDSCAPED, PAVED OR OTHERWISE PROTECTED.
TEMPORARY SYSTEMS MAY BE UTILIZED THROUGH
CONSTRUCTION. PERIODIC SWEEPING OF THE PAVED
AREAS WILL HELP EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE INFILTRATION
SYSTEM.

1. THESE PLANS ARE APPROVED FOR STANDARD ROAD
AND DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS ONLY. PLANS FOR
STRUCTURES SUCH AS BRIDGES, VAULTS, AND
RETAINING WALLS REQUIRE A SEPARATE REVIEW AND
APPROVAL BY THE CITY PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION.
2. ROCKERIES ARE CONSIDERED TO BE A METHOD OF
BANK STABILIZATION AND EROSION CONTROL.
ROCKERIES SHALL NOT BE CONSTRUCTED TO SERVE
AS RETAINING WALLS. ALL ROCKERIES IN CITY ROAD
RIGHT-OF-WAY SHALL BE CONSTRUCTED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH CITY STANDARDS. ROCKERIES
OUTSIDE OF ROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY SHALL BE
CONSTRUCTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE.
