RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON,
DECLARING A TEMPORARY MORATORIUM ON THE ENFORCEMENT OF
CITY CODE AS IT RELATES TO CERTAIN TEMPORARY OR PORTABLE
SIGNS COMMONLY KNOWN AS A-FRAME OR SANDWICH-BOARD SIGNS.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Renton has adopted
Chapter 20, Sign Code, of Title IV (Building Regulations) , of
Ordinance No. 4260 entitled "Code of General Ordinances of the
City of Renton, Washington; and
WHEREAS, that Sign Code has been interpreted to prohibit
certain temporary or portable signs commonly referred to as A-
frame or sandwich-board signs; and
WHEREAS, the City Council is undertaking a comprehensive
review of the Sign Code; and
WHEREAS, recent complaints about enforcement of the Sign Code
have highlighted for the Council certain instances in which the
Council may believe that the Sign Code is too restrictive with
respect to A-frame or sandwich-board signs;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON,
WASHINGTON, DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS :
SECTION I. The above recitals are found to be true and
correct in all respects .
SECTION II. There is hereby declared a moratorium on the
enforcement of the Sign Code with respect to those temporary or
portable signs commonly known as A-frame or sandwich-board signs .

SECTION III. This moratorium shall apply only to such signs
existing at the time of enactment of this moratorium and not to
any signs erected, placed, or installed after the date of this
resolution. Should there be any question about the preexisting
status of a sign, the burden of proving that preexisting status
shall be on the sign owner.
SECTION IV. This moratorium shall cover signs both on
public and private property, except, however, no signs are
protected by this moratorium if they present a hazard to
pedestrian traffic, vehicular traffic, or sight distances . This
moratorium is not intended to affect City Code sections 4-20-
8 .A. 1, 2 and 6 .
SECTION V. This moratorium shall be in effect until the
City Council takes action by either amending the Sign Code or
declining to amend the Sign Code with respect to temporary or
portable signs commonly known as A-frame or sandwich-board signs .
