RESOLUTION NO. 2481
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON
ENDORSING THE PROPOSED MUTUAL NUCLEAR WEAPONS
FREEZE BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET
UNION
WHEREAS , the United States and the Soviet Union are
presently engaged in an arms race of unprecedented dimension; and
WHEREAS, the results of this arms race is a world that is
less stable, less secure and moving ever closer to a nuclear
holocaust ; NOW THEREFORE
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DO
RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS :
SECTION I : The above recitals are found to be true and
correct .
SECTION II : As an immediate strategic arms control
objective , the United States and the Soviet Union should :
1 . Pursue a complete halt to the nuclear arms race ;
2 . Decide when and how to achieve a mutual and verifiable
freeze on the testing, production and future deployment of nuclear
warheads , missiles and other delivery systems ; and
3 . Give special attention to destablizing weapons whose
deployment would make such a freeze more difficult to achieve .
SECTION III : Proceeding from this freeze , the United
States and Soviet Union should pursue major, mutual and verifiable
reductions in nuclear warheads , missiles and other delivery
systems , through annual percentages or equally effective means ,
in a manner that enhances stability.
SECTION IV: The City of Renton formally communicate
this endorsement to the congressional delegates whose districts
lie within the boundaries of the City of Renton.
