ORDINANCE N0. 347 _
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON , WASHINGTON
CREATING THE POSITION OF BUILDING OFFICIAL,
ESTABLISHING GENERAL DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN
AS FOLLOWS :
SECTION I : There is hereby created and established the position of
Building Official . The Building Official shall be appointed by the Mayor
confirmed by the Council
and/ hold office at the pleasure of the appointing authority .
SECTION II : General Duties : The position of Building Official
is a professional position in the field of building, inspection,
permits and code enforcement . The position further includes administra-
tive work assisting and directing project supervision and checking for
compliance with plans and code requirements . The Building Official
shall have the following duties among others :
1. Administer central permit issuance system and coordinate
the review of permit applications and plans with other
city divisions .
2 . Interpret City building codes and assist the public with
construction and development requirements .
3 . Prepare reports and make presentations to the Board of
Adjustment and at dangerous building hearings .
4. Respond to citizen complaints and inquiries regarding
code requirements .
5 . Supervise field inspection of`new and modified structures
for conformity to codes .
6 . Examine applications and enforce building, zoning and
environment-codes .
7 . Supervise the daily operation of the department , assign
work and establish priorities .
8 . Recommend revisions to City ordinances pertaining to
code enforcement, inspection services and permit issuance.
9 . Prepare and administer department budget
10 . Perform related work as required by the Mayor or City Council.

SECTION III: Qualifications : The appointee must have a thorough
knowledge of building regulations for permit issuance, plan review and
field inspection, as well as a knowledge of intergovenmental relations
and the function of the various governmental, jurisdictions . In addition
thereto , the appointee should have knowledge of building construction
.technology, standard practices and methods of building and inspection
and should have the ability to exercise technical supervision over
both administrative and inspection staffs . It is necessary to
establish effective working relationships with associates , subordinates
and other department heads .
SECTION IV: Educational Qualifications : The appointee shall hold
a standard high school degree or equivalent plus two years of college .
courses in engineering or related studies . Additionally, it will be
necessary to have three to five years experience in building construction
and two years experience in 'a building inspection capacity. Additional
experience with -municipgI codes. and inspection may be substituted for
education on a year by year basis , only for the college classes . A
building inspection certificate is preferred.
SECTION V: Salary : . The salary of the Building Official shall
be as determined in the City' s annual budget from time to time.
