CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON
ORDINANCE NO. 3733
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON,
AMENDING A PORTION OF SECTION 4-2204 OF TITLE
IV (BUILDING REGULATIONS) OF ORDINANCE NO. 1628
ENTITLED "CODE OF GENERAL ORDINANCES OF THE
CITY OF RENTON" RELATING TO FIRE LANES
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I : Subsection 15 of Section 4-2204 of Title IV (Building
Regulations) of Ordinance No. 1628 entitled "Code of General Ordinances
of the City of Renton" is amended to read as follows:
Section 4-2204 15. , as amended: Fire Lanes
A. Standards : As required by the Fire Codes and the Fire
Department (See Title VII , Chapters 9, 10 and 11 (Fire Codes) - Title
III, Chapter 4 (Fire Department) , hard surface driving fire lanes
shall be installed surrounding facilities which by their size, location,
design or contents warrant access which exceeds that normally provided
by the proximity of City streets. Additional fire lanes may be required
in order to provide access for fire fighting or rescue operations at
building entrances or exits , fire hydrants and fire protection system
service connection or control devices . Lanes shall provide a minimum
unobstructed continuous width of twenty feet (20 ' ) and provide• & minitmum
vertical clearance of thirteen feet, six inches (13 ' 6") . Lanes shall
be identified by a four inch (4") wide line and block letters two feet
(2' ) high, painted in the lane, at fifty foot (50' ) intervals stating
"FIRE LANE - NO PARKING", color to be bright red, or by the posting of
signs state, "FIRE LANE - NO PARKING" . Signs shall be twelve inches by

eighteen inches (12"x18") and shall have letters and background of
contrasting colors , readily readable from at least a fifty foot (50 ' )
distance. Signs shall be spaced not further than fifty feet (50 ' )
apart nor shall they be more than four feet (4' ) from the ground.
Fire lanes shall be an all weather surface constructed of asphalt or
reinforced concrete certified capable of supporting a twenty (20) ton
vehicle, or when specifically authorized by the Fire Department , crushed
rock may be used, provided, written certification is provided from a
soils engineer, that the roadway will support the weight of operating
fire apparatus . Where fire lanes connect to City streets or parking
lots , adequate clearances and turning radii shall be provided.
B. Driveways and/or Parking Area : The Fire Department
may require that areas specified for use as driveways or private
thoroughfares shall be designated as fire lanes and be marked or identifie.
as required by this Section.
C. Existing Buildings : When the Fire Chief, or his
authorized designee, determines that a hazard due to inaccessibility of
fire apparatus exists around existing buildings , he may require fire
lanes to be constructed and maintained as provided by this Section.
EXCEPTION: When the required clearances outlined in
Section A, cannot be physically provided, modification may be allowed
upon written application and approval of the Fire Chief.
SECTION II: This Ordinance shall be effective upon its
passage, approval and five days after publication.
