HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 1320 Ole RESOLUTION NO. /3 2-- BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON AS FOLLOWS: SECTION I: There is hereby established a Municipal Art Commission to be hereafter known as the "Renton Municipal Art CommissionY which shall act in an advisory capacity to the city government of The City of Renton in connection with the artistic and cultural development of the City. Such Commission shall consist of twelve (12) members, appointed by the Mayor and subject to confirmation by a majority of the members of the City Council. The membership on the Commission shall, whenever possible, include members from each of the following arts and professions: to-wit painting, sculpture, music, literature, architecture, including landscape architecture and related fields. The Mayor and City Council may solicit suggested nominations for such appointments from architectural, art, musical , literary, educa- tional and other cultural organizations. SECTION II: All such appointments to the Commission shall be for one, two and three-year terms, with one-third of the terms expiring each year and thereafter all such appointments shall be for periods of three years, provided that any vacancy shall be filled for the unexpired term. All appointments heretofore made by the Mayor and City Council to such Municipal Art Commissions are hereby confirmed. SECTION III: All members of the Commission shall serve without compensation for such service. SECTION IV: The Commission shall organize and elect a chairman annually and adopt such administrative procedures as are necessary to accomplish the purposes of the Commission which shall consist primarily of advising the Mayor and City Council, and other City Departments on the improvement, betterment and furtherance of all artistic and cultural activities within the City. In order to implement such pur- poses, ur-poses, City Officials and members of the various City Departments are encouraged to "cnsult and advise with the Commission from time to time. SECTION V: No work of art shall be contracted for or placed on property ofmed by the City of Renton or: bedvme the property of the City of Renton by purchase, gift or otherwise, except for museum or gallery, unless such work of art, or a design or model of the same, together with the proposed location of such work of art shall first have been submitted to the Commission for its recommendation to the City Council and such recommendation shall be made, in any event, within thirty (30) days from the date of submission; provided however that the final decision as to the purchase or location of any such work of art shall rest with the City Council or the respective City Board or Commission having jurisdiction thereover. The term "work of art" as used in this -1- .zti • ) " + w f Resolution shall comprise paintings, mural decorations, stained glass, statues, bas reliefs or other sculptures, monnmPnts, fountains, arches or other structures of a permanent or temporary character intended for ornament or commemoration. The Commission may prepare specifications for the maintenance of works of art and shall inspect such maintenance work for the guidance of the respective City Departments. The Commission may further submit its recommendations as to any build- ings, bridges, viaducts, elevated ways, gates, fences, lamp standards or other municipally owned structures or facilities erected on or to be erected upon land belonging to the City of Renton. The Commission with the assistance of the City Building Department is authorized to prepare and maintain a roster of sites and structures in the City of historic significance and may recommend to the City Council from time to time measures for the preservation of any such structure listed on said roster. SECTION VI: The Commission may advise with owners of private property relating to any beautification of such property and any such private party may submit to the Commission copies of plans and specifications for such improvements for advice and recommendations and no charge shall be made by the Commission for any such service rendered to any private party.
