ORDINANCE N0. 4078
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON,
AMENDING CHAPTER 10 (TRAFFIC) OF ORDINANCE �IO. 1628
ENTITLED "CODE OF ��NER�L ORDINANCES OF �'HE CITY OF
RENTON" BY ADDI.NG A SECTION R.EGULATING USE OF
COMPRESSTON BRAKES , AD.DING DEFINITIONS, DECLARING USE
ILLEGAL, PROVIDING FOR USE BY EMERGENCY VEHICLES AND
DURING EMERGENCIES AND PRO'VIDING FOR PENALTIES �'OR
VIOLATION
THE CITY COU�ICIL OF T43E CITX OF RENTON, WASHINGTON DO ORDAIN
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I : Chapter 10 ('�ra�'Eic) of �rdinance No. 1628
entitled "Code of General Ordinances of the �ity of Renton" is
hereby amended by adding the £ollowing Section:
�ection 10-125 REGU�ATING TJSE OF COMPRESSION BRAKES
A. Definitions:
l . "Brake" means any device used for slowing, h�lting or
stopping the movement of_ any motor vehicle .
2. "Motor vehicle" means and inclu�es every self-prflpelled
device capable of being moved upon a public highway and
in, u�on or by which any pezson or property is or may
be transported or �rawn upon � public hi�hway,
excepting devises moved by human or animal power or
used exclusively upan stationary rails or tracks, and
including automobiles, tractors , trucks, trailers and
transportation equipment of all kinds and siz�s or any
combination or combinations of the same .
B. Use Declared Illeg�l: The City Council finds that the
use within the City limits of motor vehicle brakes which are
activated or w�rked by the compression of the engine of a

motor v�hicle disturbs and disrupts the public p�ac� an�
quiet and the enjoyment of property. The us� within the
City limits of any motor vehicle brak�s which are in any w�y
activate� or o�erated by the compression of the engin� of
�ny such motor vehicle or oE any unit or part thereof is
prohibited, unless th� noise cre�ted thereby is ef_fectively
muffled.
C . Exception: Em�rgency vehicles may u�� compressi�n
brakes, as may any v�hicle when faced with a sudden,
unexpected or unantici.pated emergency which presents a
significant risk to human life or property.
D. Violation Decl�red a Traf_fic Infracticn Penalty: Any
person who violates any of the provisions o.f thi� chapter or
who allows or permits any motor vehicle owned and/or
operated by said person to be operat�d in violation of any
af the provisions of this chapter is guilty of a traffic
infraction pursuant to RCW 46.63. 020 and may be fined a sum
not to exceed two hundred and fifty dollars ($250 . 00 ) �lus
any applicable penalties and costs.

SECTION II : This Ordinance shall be effective unon its
passage, approval and thirty c�ays after publication.
