AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, AMENDING
SECTIONS 2-201, 202, 204, 205, 206, 207, and 208 OF CHAPTER
2 (PLANNING COMMISSION) OF TITLE II (COMMISSIONS AND BOARDS)
OF ORDINANCE NO. 1628 ENTITLED "CODE OF GENERAL ORDINANCES
OF THE CITY OF REIQ TON" .
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON,
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: Existing Sections 2-201, 202, 204, 205, 206, 207 and 208 of
Chapter 2 (Planning Commission) of Title II (Commissions and Boards) of Ordinance No.
1628 entitled "Code of General Ordinances of the City of Renton" are hereby amended
to read as follows:
Section 2-201, as amended: Pursuant to R.C.W. 35,63.020, also known as
Chapter 44 of the Session Laws of 1935 of the State of Washington, the CITY OF RENTON
hereby establishes a City Planning Commission which shall consist of not less than
seven (7) nor more than nine (9) appointed members, who shall be appointed by the
Mayor and confirmed by the Council. Not more than one-third of the members of the
Planning Commission may be ex officio members by virtue of office held in the CITY OF
RENTON. The term of office for ex officio members shall correspond to their respective
tenures. as city officers.
Section 2-202, as amended: The term of office for the first appointive members
appointed to the Planning Commission shall be designated from one (1) to six (6) years
in such manner as to provide that the fewest possible terms will expire in any one
year. Thereafter the full term of office for each appointed member shall be six (6)
years. The terms of the respective members so appointed shall be fixed and designated
by the Mayor at the time of their appointment and confirmed by the City Council.
Section 2-204, as amended: The Planning Commission shall have all of the
powers and perform each and all of the duties as specified in R.C.W. 35.63.060 which
shall include, but not be limited to, the duties required of the Planning Commission
in investigating, recommending and making all necessary surveys relative to all matters
set forth in Chapter 7 (Zoning Ordinance) of Title IV (Building Regulations) and
Chapter 1 (Platting and subdivision Ordinances) of Title IX (Public Ways and Property)
of Ordinance No. 1628 known as "Code of General Ordinances of the City of Renton".
The Commission shall further recommend to the Council from time to time the
adoption of any ordinance, rule or regulation relative to the location and the use
of buildings, structures and land for residence, trade, industrial and other purposes,
the height, number of stories, size, construction and design of buildings and other

structures, the size of yards, courts and other open spaces on lots or tracts; the
density of population therein; the setback of buildings along property lines, streets,
alleys, highways, parks or public waterfrontages; and the subdivision and development of
land. All such Ordinances, rules and regulations heretofore and hereafter adopted by the
City Council shall be and become part of and in their entirety shall constitute, a com-
prehensive plan which the Planning Commission shall maintain for the physical and other
generally advantageous development of the CITY. The comprehensive plan shall be designed
in such manner, among other things, as to encourage the most appropriate use of land
throughout the CITY, to lessen traffic congestion and accidents, to secure safety from fire,
to provide adequate light and air and prevent over -crowding of land, to avoid undue con-
centration of population, to promote a coordinated development of the unbuilt areas, to
encourage the formation of neighborhood or community units, to secure an appropriate
allottment of land area in new developments for all the requirements of community life,
to conserve and restore natural beauty and other natural resources, and to facilitate the
provision of adequate transportation, water, sewerage and other public utilities and
facilities. The Commission may recommend to the City Council a plan compiled by it as
a whole, or recommend parts of the plan by successive recommendations. Before the recom-
mendation of the initial plan to the City Council, the Commission shall hold at least one
public hearing thereon, giving such notice thereof as is required in R.C.W. 35.63.100 et seq.
Section 2-205, as amended: The Planning Commission at or before its first
regular meeting in February of each year, shall make a full report in writing to the
Council of its transactions and expenditures, if any, for the preceding year, together
with such general recommendations and findings as to -matters covered by its prescribed
duties and authority.
Section 2-206: Existing Section 2-206 is hereby repealed in full.
Section 2-207, as amended: The Commission shall elect its own Chairman and
create and fill such other offices as it may determine it requires from time to time.
Members and officers of the Planning Commission shall not receive salaries or compensation
for services thereon. The Commission shall hold at least one regular meeting in each
month for not less than nine (9) months in each year. It shall adopt rules for the trans-
action of business, adopt its own By -Laws not inconsistent herewith, and shall keep a
written record of its proceedings, which shall be a public record.
Section -2-208, as amended: A majority of the appointive members as hereinabove
specified shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business. Ex officio members
of the Commission, if any are appointed, shall have no voting rights. Appointment of

ex officio members shall be limited to the City Engineer, Superintendent of Utilities,
and one member of the City Council respectively except that the first two named may
designate their assistant or alternate to attend the Planning Commission meetings
during their absence, sickness or inability to attend.
SECTION II: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and
after its passage, approval and legal publication.
